Hello
Judging by the sold out release of the Gerry Anderson's UFO Blu-ray collection, I'd say the series release was a hit. I haven't read anything about a North American release date (particularly in Canada ) and was wondering if anyone knew if there were plans to do so? If not, I'd like to start a dialog to see if there were interested parties, such as myself who would desire the series to come to North America. I hope the distributors are waiting to see how well the series is recieved in the UK and announce a North American release date. If not I hope there is enough interest on this page to have them take notice and consider it. Thank you in advance to those wishing to comment on this subject. |

This subject does come up occasionally on the popular DVD/Blu-ray website "The Digital Bits", as they would also like to see Space: 1999 Year Two released in the USA. The impression I get is that Lionsgate or Shout! are the companies that have the rights to release these ITC titles. But so far, no plans have been announced.

Well I hope they change their minds. I'd love a nice remastered copy of the series. Some people in the USA (including myself) just purchase the foreign releases and play those. You'd need a multi-zone player, or a computer to play them though.
I've seen the photos of the packaging on the Network set (on Roobarb's forum), and it looks really nice. I doubt any USA release will be so elaborate. Marc |
I should check my players to see if they play multi zones. Good idea. Have you ever tried some of your foreign releases in a regular zone-locked player, Marc? A friend of mine claims that while some of his foreign releases are supposedly region-locked, some of them will still play in his regular blu-ray player.

Yes, sometimes a release can be labelled as region locked, but the discs actually aren't. I don't know if these new UFO Blu-rays fall into this category or not. I hear that the new documentaries are 25 frames per second, which won't work on my USA television regardless, so I'll have to watch those on my computer. Marc |
Network's Space: 1999 discs do not play in zone A players. If I do not change the zone on my player to B hated screen wirh zone incompatibility appears. I doubt they've changed theri policy on UFO...

Aren't you limited to switching regions on your pc blu-ray drive 5 times?

No, I rip the contents of the disc to my hard drive, using MakeMKV, then watch the resulting .mkv file in a media player. My set has now arrived, BTW. I'm not particularly thrilled with the packaging... it looks good, but not very practical. Discs hard to remove, episode titles not on disc labels, information about discs hidden by discs and clear plastic disc holders, cardboard disc holders get fingerprints on them. Also, the book is way too thick for its height and width, so hard to keep the book open to read. Episodes are 24 frames per second. Audio is LPCM and DTS-HD MA 5.1. Encryption is AACS v62. That's all I know for now. :-) Marc |
Ah, yes, I never thought about MakeMKV! I had tried the free beta version a while back and loved it. Planned on buying a license for it but financial issues have cropped up.
Thanks for the info about your newly arrived discs. You aren't the first one I've heard that has issues with the packaging. -------------------------------------------- On Tue, 11/15/16, Marc Martin [via SHADO] <[hidden email]> wrote: Subject: [SHADO] Re: North America release: Gerry Anderson's UFO Blu-ray collection To: "SHADO" <[hidden email]> Date: Tuesday, November 15, 2016, 12:38 PM > Aren't you limited to switching regions on your pc blu-ray drive 5 times? Yes, you'll need the latest version of MakeMKV to decrypt this. :-)
I've just added photos of the packaging to the bottom of this page: http://new.ufoseries.com/video/bluray/uk/ Marc |

So, the shipment was carried over there by prioritized Seagull X Ray? Thanks for the pics!

I'm also compiling frame capture comparisons here:
http://new.ufoseries.com/video/compare/ Although Network has claimed that this is the best version of UFO ever, I think that is debatable. The DALOTEK frame is downright blurry compared to the Japanese version. And a large amount of TIMELASH appears to be botched, as the bottom part of the image has been oddly darkened. Marc |

Thanks for the updates, Marc.
Personally speaking, I don't place great store on packaging as long as it does its job i.e. protect the discs from damage. Also, I've never seen any of the German or Japanese Blu-Rays, so I don't have a point of comparison like you do. As long as they're sharper and clearer than the soft and blurry DVD's, then that's an upgrade as far as I'm concerned, and the 5.1 Surround will always be superior to Mono. You sound like you're a bit disappointed? Like you expected better? |

Yes, I'm disappointed because in the past, such a good job of restoration had been done for Space:1999, that there could be few complaints about the results. However, for UFO, I've already seen several complaints about the results, and it's only the first few days. I'm even seeing people who now say that they are glad that they didn't pre-order it, and will stick with their DVDs. So it's not as good as it could have been. Network was certainly more lazy about this restoration than the restoration work that was done for the DVDs, and in some scenes one could argue that an upscaled DVD looks better than the Blu-ray, which should never happen.
As for the soundtrack, I generally prefer the original mono soundtracks, as the 5.1 versions are often poorly done by people who don't know how to do good job, or don't have the original separated audio elements to do a good job (or both). In the case of UFO, there are no separate vocal, special effects, and music tracks to create a 5.1 soundtrack with, so you can only do audio trickery to come up with something. Marc |

I've just added DVD frame captures to my comparison, from the old UK Carlton DVD box. There are at least a few cases here where I think the DVD is better than the new Blu-ray.

Well, that's interesting!
Looking at your screen captures (on a £200, 19" LCD monitor) you're right: the DVD does look better than the UK Blu-Ray, the colours just look more natural. However, your shots also clearly show that the DVD's are softer and blurrier, which is completely exacerbated on a 65" OLED TV like mine! As a point of interest, because I've got my Box on the way, I decided to watch "Identified" again tonight (US Megaset version) and the picture is just so grainy yet soft. Undoubtedly, screen size, screen technology and viewing distance all play a part, as does the way your TV is set up, whether it's been professionally calibrated etc etc. I'm not disputing anything you say, Marc, you are clearly more of an aficionado than me and these differences do bother you. But all I can say is that I'm expecting the Blu-Rays to be better in many ways but not perfect. Probably because a decision is taken by someone regarding colours, contrast, black levels and brightness, and those settings may not suit everyone. Thankfully, I didn't throw out the baby with the bathwater and have kept both my US and Australian DVD sets! |
