And the old memory banks reminded me that Robert A.
Heinlein wrote about a version of "solid chess" in
"Starman Jones"--circa 1949 or thereabouts. In the
book, our hero, Max Jones plays a 3D chess and talks
about a version that his uncle played that was 4D
(somehow involved a way of doing hyperspace jumps for
your pieces).
So, it's much older than Star Trek!
