There is only one real good playable version that I know of called
hyperchess and that one is here:
http://www2.connectnet.com/users/hchess/I have seen it and it is very nice. Hypershess is closer in appearance to
the Star Trek 3D chess but this one is the only one I ever heard of that
didn't have problems with weird rules or game resolution. It plays with
basically the same rules as regular chess.
It is a bit expensive but I think that there is enough info and pictures on
the web page to build and play a home-built one.
