I've still yet to find a nice, large photo of the
upcoming A&E UFO DVD box set. However, I did find
a head-on view of it here (instead of the angled view
at A&E):
Marc-
I got my Captain Scarlet box set yesterday and it does come in the
translucent library case I saw a week or two ago. I would ssume UFO will
be packaged the same way.
The Captain Scarlet set is great, btw.

I also just got my Captain Scarlet set, so now I understand what this
new packaging is like. Sort of like a regular plastic DVD case,
except it's fatter and has two inner plastic holders (sort of like
the fat CD's which have 3 or 4 discs). In theory this particular
case could hold 6 DVD's -- it's amazing that something a little
larger than a standard VHS case can hold the entire Captain
Scarlet series!
A&E's new packaging is certainly a lot cheaper (and cheesier)
than the Carlton UFO packaging, but on the other hand it's easier
to work with -- no outer sleeve to remove, and you don't have
to open up the whole thing just to get at a DVD. And I suspect
the DVD's won't keep falling out of their holder, like they
seem to on my Cartlon sets. I also see that A&E has switched
from B&W to color artwork on the discs, which is a nice
improvement from the B&W ones they've been using in the past.
I guess with all the money saved in the outer packaging they
can spend a little more on the discs!
So in summary -- the Carlton packaging *is* very elaborate,
very expensive (I'm sure) to produce, and gorgeous. However,
the ultra-cheap A&E packaging is certainly more practical.
And since A&E has been pretty boring about their packaging
artwork in the past, I guess we're probably better off with
as little packaging as possible (just one two-sided sleeve
for the whole set, no booklet, and no trading cards).
Certainly this packaging is no worse than a lot of the
movie DVD's I rent...
