Hi all,
So, now that folks are starting to receive their UFO DVD Set 2, does anyone have any comments on the quality or the special features? I already made my comments a month ago, although I still haven't watched that many episodes to see if there are any isolated "glitches" in the transfer. I think the closest thing I've found so far is a scene in THE SOUND OF SILENCE when Anne is opening a barn door, and it looks like the frame rate is slowed down (like it's in slow motion). I'll have to check sometime to see if that is on other video versions, or is unique to the A&E version... Marc |

Hi Marc,
Could this be the effect one sees when the DVD reader is switching modes in a dual layer DVD? Just an idea... Usually a layer switch on my DVD player shows up as a momentary "freeze". This seemed like it was simply slow-motion. In any case, it's not a big deal... I doubt anyone would have even noticed it if I hadn't mentioned it! Marc |

I only noticed that detail after it was pointed out.
Also - on The Sound Of Silence - in the opening sequence, evry time the horse jumps over a fence (the first four times) the playback 'freeze frames'. I don't remember the video being like this - but I have to check - it seems unnatural. Great episode though! that is normal, when the scifi channel broadcast it, it was the same

The freeze frames of the horse jumping over the fence is normal. This
happens with the laser disc of The Sound of Silence and that was my recollection when the episode originally aired. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Anthony Caira" <[hidden email]> To: <[hidden email]> Sent: Wednesday, January 29, 2003 5:17 PM Subject: Re: [SHADO] A&E's UFO DVD Set 2 > I only noticed that detail after it was pointed out. > Also - on The Sound Of Silence - in the opening sequence, evry time the > horse jumps over a fence (the first four times) the playback 'freeze > frames'. > I don't remember the video being like this - but I have to check - it seems > unnatural. > Great episode though! > TC > > > > > on 29/1/03 7:44 pm, Jessica Ramage at [hidden email] wrote: > > > Marc wrote: I still haven't watched that many episodes to > > see if there are any isolated "glitches" in > > the transfer. I just went back to find the slow-motion scene, and now I can't find it! Perhaps I just imagined it... :-) Marc |

Hi Anthony, this is correct, it is on the PAL videos also. This obviously should support the title (Sound of Silence) so you can "hear" the silence instead the sound of the galloping horses e.g. BTW, there is no music with the episode titles, too. And yes, it is a great episode; one of my favourites 8-) Christian |

In case someone is about to ask me :-), no, I don't remember which episode. But I am pretty sure this wasn't normal, since it was in the middle of a dialog (maybe in Straker's office?). Tried a few times with the same result. Last time I saw it, I didn't have a second DVD player, so couldn't tell if it was the DVD, or maybe some strange interaction with the DVD and my player. Don't remember anyone commenting about this before... David Levine |

The shot is at 17.01 into the episode (PAL timing) when the hippy character from the forest goes into the barn. It as an optically printed slow-mo from a later shot when Anne goes into the barn. I imagine this was because they needed a shot of the barn door opening, and the only one they had was from a later scene with the Anne character. But by slightly slowing it down they were able to use the few frames of the shot before she enters. This is as original. As other people have said, the freeze frames during the episode credits are also as original. You can see that these stills are produced optically on film as there's some weave on the image. It was a very effective way I think of getting the idea of the episode across, with the soundtrack cutting to silence at those points. Jonathan |

Ahh, that explains why I couldn't find it the second time -- I only looked at the scene when Anne opened the barn door, not realizing that there was a previous scene of the barn door opening. In any case, I can't blame it on A&E or the remastering if it's been there all along! I probably didn't notice it before because the Japanese UFO laserdiscs were always so dark during the night scenes that you couldn't see ANYTHING! Marc |
