A Question of Episodes

Griff
This post was updated on .
Hi All :)

I have a question to you all, and it's a BIGGY!

I have known my wife (Tracey Ellen) for nearly half my life, and this year is our 10th wedding anniversary... not quite a quarter of the same. Okay so far...

My wife has NEVER seen ANY episodes of UFO, does not know the premise or anything about it. However, Ellen has seen and enjoyed Thunderbirds and is aware of some other Gerry Anderson TV series, but never UFO.

As a present to me, Ellen is 'willing to watch' one (initially) episode of UFO. I know this may sound a little patronizing on her part, but it's not, and you'll have to take my word for that. Ellen rarely watches TV, has never used Facebook (yuk) as her whole world revolves around animals (we have a whole menagerie: horses, cows, dogs, cats, etc... I also qualify in that regard, so I'm okay :)

Ellen really does know and appreciate how HUGELY important UFO is to me, but never ventures into my UFO room... yes, (sigh) I have a whole room in my house dedicated to UFO, my UFO paraphernalia and is even decorated in UFO colors and decor. As an aside, I am currently building a fairly exact replica of Lt. Ford's Control Station, and later I intend to build a complete Moonbase Central Console :) I will have updates on my website once I get stuck in.

So, my question is: Excepting 'Identified' as the obvious answer, which episode of UFO should I show Ellen? I am not including, 'The Cat with Ten Lives' as it's my least favorite, and I know Ellen would hate it on sight...

I REALLY would be grateful and appreciate any suggestions - also with your reasons.

Best to all :)

Griff

PS. I initially somewhat stupidly thought of doing this via Twitter, but no, I'll keep with to REAL UFO fans...

Hmm...
AQOP is pretty high on the list. Human interest story.

Well, if she likes animals, then how about THE SOUND OF SILENCE?  :-)

A QUESTION OF PRIORITIES is a good episode, but rather depressing,
so that might be a turnoff.

IDENTIFIED sets up the premise, but is slow.  EXPOSED might be a
better choice (maybe, maybe not).

I got my wife to watch all 26 episodes back when the DVDs came out.  :-)

I think Exposed would be the one I'd go for. Nice tight script and some really excellent scenes with Vladek and Robin Bailey as Kofax.

Personally, (and I have had the same problem myself!) I would chose the episode that you love the most. whether it's Identified, Sub-smash, Mindbender, CCA-OK ... it doesn't matter really. What does matter is that it's your favourite episode. Your love and your enthusiasm will, hopefully, be infectious. ;)

You should negotiate and get to obtain her watch at least TWO episodes. In fact in my opinion the best episodes (timelash, The long sleep, mindbender, reflections in the water, ecc...) all request that you already know the characters of the series. So you should instead start with an introductory episode, like e.g. Exposed, Destruction, The sound of silence, The Man who came back, Kill Straker... and only then, as second episode, the BIG favourite of yours.

PS: when I showed some UFO episodes to wife, I think she seemed to prefer The long sleep. However she never really loved the series or watched it entirely!

I thought to recommend The Sound of Silence, but it features mutilated dog...

Hello All :)

I just wanted to thank you all for your great suggestions. Thank you!

Saturday is the BIG DAY, and all is set.

I have setup the BIG TV so UFO plays at the right aspect ratio, video (converted all the UFO DVDs and BlueRay discs to digital so they'll play anywhere) and tuned the audio to match UFO mono - okay it's on peudo... Dolby Hi-Def... but sounds really awesome! I've heard things I have never noticed before.

I've had a selection of UFO t-shirts made, dinner is booked (unlike Commander Straker we won't be eating from a can ... wife would NOT be impressed :)

So, the stage is set, and wish me luck!

Thank you all once again.

Griff

PS. Hey, look. I know some of you must think I'm nuts, but hey... this is REALLY IMPORTANT to me :)

PPS. So which episodes did you go for, I hear you ask...

Wow, good luck... are you going to be showing the Blu-ray version, or the DVD version?
Seems like the Blu-rays would work best for a big screen.

Hi Marc,

Thanks!

I will be showing the blu-ray version on a 55" curved OLED LG 55EC930V with Bose sound system.

It's gonna be fun :)

I'll have to be careful NOT to pay too much attention to the girls on Moonbase ... we already have a dog, and my wife wants another horse ... Marc knows only too well what I mean :)

Best to all,

Griff

PS. Thank for uploading those UFO publicity photo (and also thanks to ISOSHADO)

Oh well, that sounds very fancy... I haven't even gone to the stores to see what an
OLED TV looks like (although they are supposed to be the best).

Ha!  Well, technically I paid to much attention to Antonia Ellis, not a Moonbase
operative. :-)  Although my wife loves the dog that she got out of that....

Re: A Question of Episodes

Hi Marc,

Sorry, I didn't mean for that to sound all me me me... As a technical artist/illustrator, I spend hours and hours a day looking at computer screens, colors, angles, detail, etc. etc. Trouble is that it has skewed my vision to the extent that anything looks faded and dull ... so hence the fancy screen setup.

Hey, eye for detail is what I do.

Oh dear, I'd better check how often the Moonbase girls make an appearance and overt my gaze accordingly :)

Thanks

Oh I understand... if you look at my "UFO publicity photos" page, you'll
see that I do a lot of "looking at the screen" as well, since the original
scans never look anything like the final posted JPEG.  :-)

Hi Marc,

Yes, I can really see that :)

You must take a lot of time and trouble, and as a die-hard UFO fan with UFO in my veins and DNA, all I can say is HUGE Thank You! and please keep up the great work, the www.UFOSeries.com website and all your other Facebook updates.

WOW, this has been just like the old days :)

Thanks!

Yes, although sometimes I'm not happy with the end results.  For example, my
recent Skydiver photo has been driving me crazy lately... either the color
saturation is too high, or the colors are wrong, etc.  Can't quite pinpoint what
I don't like about it, but I definitely "overenhanced it":

So it will have to be redone.  :-)

Hi All :)

I meant to give an update to this thread, but have been sooo busy I just plain forgot ... tut tut!

Well, overall the evening was a great success! Hooray!

A little Chablis to ease into the evening...
The stage was set, audio and video worked perfectly. Lights dimmed...
A little more Chablis to oil the cogs...
Dinner went down very well.
A little more Chablis...
Very good indeed.

UFO... well, I am pretty certain Ellen enjoyed it. Thought the premise was really scary and thought provoking (in the end I showed Identified followed by Exposed).

Ellen thought the colors, sets and costumes were amazing, considering UFO was made over ten years before she was even born.

Bottom line, yes, Ellen can see why I love the show, but will leave to my own devices when I am in my UFO mode (all right, nearly every day.)

Does she want to see any further episodes... well, not really. but, will if it makes me happy... (I always knew marriage is all about compromise...)

But hey, either way that's cool... and we are going to renew our wedding vows next year. So, I guess it's win, Win, WIN!!!

Best to all, and thank you all So very much :)

Happy Easter

Griff
