Bit late with this, but - someone sent me a photo of Ed appearing
at a demonstration in 2004, and I believe that he's wearing the
exact same overcoat and hat as on that day in 2001:

I believe the type of hat Ed is wearing in that 2004 photo is a
fedora.....Pam the Canuck
