I notice in The Square Triangle and A Question Of Priorities the aliens seem to be perfectly capable of breathing air without relying on the green liquid. In other episodes they need the green stuff.
When Foster had the helmet on breathing the liquid, I would have told him to breathe out as far as he could and hold his breath while the helmet was removed. This would have reduced the amount of liquid in his lungs to expire. I should have been a doctor but never really bothered...
