I also can't access The Professionals, which really sucks, because I would have liked to see Billington as a psycho! But British TV isn't readily available online in the US, and no one has more than an episode guide and a cast list. *sigh* One day TV will be global and free. Thanks. I think he was in another TV show in the 70's but you will enjoy the show as it is very, very funny.

Now that I know he's in it, I'll put it at the top! Thanks so much! I'm always on the lookout for a new show to watch, and so many of them are boring, boring, boring! So I've gotten so that I'm a bit skittish in trying out a new one, because of the disappointment. But I'll check this one out! Yours, Denise [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] |

That is a serious Bummer! Over here we have more channels than we can handle but they put so much crap on. I get The Professionals, The Saint, UFO, The Champions, The Prisoner (big, big fan) and Space 1999 etc on ITV4 which is great except I have seen all these great shows more than once; in fact around ten times. I want to get UFO as a box set. I don't buy DVDs but as it is one of my top 5 shows ever I have to have it. I have the 35th anniversry edition of The Prisoner and that is the only DVD I own. Can you not order Detectives / Professionals from Amazon or am I being dumb and ignorant again?
Thanks for response Stevan --- On Sun, 11/14/10, Neesierie <[hidden email]> wrote: From: Neesierie <[hidden email]> Subject: [SHADO] Re: UFO actors To: [hidden email] Date: Sunday, November 14, 2010, 5:46 PM --- In [hidden email], "Neesierie" <neesierie@...> wrote: > > I've heard of The Detectives! Perhaps it ought to be emphasized for the unwary that The Detectives was a fairly broad comedy series and perhaps not to everyone's taste.
For anyone who wants to watch a series where George Sewell appears regularly in a substantial straight role and which also involved a few ITC-related actors and writers, not least George Markstein, they might be better off taking a look at Special Branch. It was also a forerunner of The Sweeney. The "Don't Blame Me" Disclaimer: I haven't seen it since it was first broadcast so I have no idea how well it stands up now. Regards John |
Just as additional information.. even the Guardian gets it wrong sometimes! ( well fairly often actually!) This is an extract from George Sewell's obituary;
On television he had a leading role in later series of Thames Television's Special Branch (1969-74) as Detective Chief Inspector Craven. During its run, he appeared on This is Your Life and topped the audience ratings that week. He drifted into science fiction as Colonel Alec Freeman, the commander of Shado, otherwise Supreme Headquarters Alien Defence Organisation, in the live-action UFO (1971-72) developed from a Gerry Anderson animated format. And in the light-hearted The Detectives (1990), with Robert Powell and Jasper Carrott, he teased the characterisation he had given in Special Branch 20 years earlier. Special Branch was certainly a very good series.. well made and 'gritty'. Ah, yes, I remember it well! --- In [hidden email], jks@... wrote: > > Perhaps it ought to be emphasized for the unwary that The Detectives was a fairly broad comedy series and perhaps not to everyone's taste. > > For anyone who wants to watch a series where George Sewell appears regularly in a substantial straight role and which also involved a few ITC-related actors and writers, not least George Markstein, they might be better off taking a look at Special Branch. Stevan, Oh, sure. I can do that. But unlike you, my hubby and I own an enormous DVD collection, and we only buy those shows we love and want to watch over and over. We have UFO, of course! *grin* I'd need to see more than clips in order to be certain we'd want to own it. Although I'm almost convinced that he'll love The Detectives just from that! Maybe I can get the first season and see what he thinks. Thanks for the thought! Yours, Denise

Thanks John and Louise! I appreciate hearing about George in a more dramatic role, although he handled the comedy in the clips I saw of The Detectives very well! But we don't have easy access to Special Branch either. However, I was fortunate enough to find some clips on YouTube. I'll be watching it for a bit to see if I like it. Thanks!

If you can get Special Branch, George is a regular on that; also Patrick Mower from "The Square Triangle" and the 2nd season Space 1999 which I don't talk about "All that glisters"... I MUST get my own box set of UFO damnit!
