Advice wanted on NTSC/PAL DVD player

Bill Cotter
I am looking for a player that can play NTSC and PAL formatted DVDs
here in the US. My trusty Apex player has been giving me problems,
and I want to find a replacement so I can continue to enjoy some of
the PAL disks of Gerry Anderson shows. If anyone has any
recommendations please let me know - probably through e-mail would be
best to keep the list on topic.

Thanks!

Get a Daewoo DVD player! You can get them for about
$89 at Sam's Club. I have the DVD-5000N model and I
think any of the 5000 series have NTCS/PAL modes (on
the fly)..also, the player is region-selectable so you
can watch any DVD from anywhere in the world. There's
a secret menu accessable from the remote. Email me if
you need any help.

You also need to have a television that is able to decode PAL signals.

I don't know if American tv's can do that without an external decoder.

Not necessarily - some DVD players will do the standard
conversion on the fly - so that the external decoder is actually
in the DVD player.

many European DVD players will provide a PAL signal from an NTSC
DVD, and I know that some US players will do it the other way
round.

The original question was for DVD players which contained
internal PAL-to-NTSC converters, so that you can just use
a regular TV set with them. There are several brands
of players which can be bought that do this, like Daewoo,
Sampo, JVC, Malata, etc.

Here's a website which does a pretty good job of laying
out the available options for someone in the USA:

I have a Malata DVP 520 and I've been really pleased with it, for what
that's worth.
