Alec Freman ???????

Edward Straker
Does anyone out there know the reason why Alec Freeman was constantly
by Straker's side, then just like that he was replaced by Col Lake? I
have nothing against her but it was never explained, he was there and
then he wasn't.

Would appreciate hearing people's thoughts.

Regards.........Straker.

Re: Alec Freman ???????

Bruce Sherman
there was a break in filming when they moved from one studio to another, the
character that played Alec simply went onto other work and did not return
when filming resumed.

Thank you for that Bruce. That explains what happened in real life but not what happened in the show, they could of killed him off or retired him or something. He could have left SHADO to work for Henderson LOL.

Regards.....Straker.

I prefer not knowing everything sometimes. Good for the imagination. I liketo think the very capable Col. Alec Freeman was seconded to some organization perhaps to set up another SHADO type HQ ...

I have it on good authority that an organization called "U.N.C.L.E." or something traded
Virginia Lake for Alec Freeman when somebody named Waverly passed away...but you
didn't hear it from me ;)

Alec Freeman ???????

Edward Straker
Would love to know what really happened, I dont buy the theory that the actor simply took another job during break, what would have happened if Ed Bishop took another job, there would be no Straker.

I also remember George Sewell coming to Australia much later and was asked a question about UFO and he claimed to know nothing about it, that he did not remember it.

Sounds to me like it was something deeper. In anycase it is what it is but still I would love to know more about what really happened.

Peace to all........................Straker out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's possible that Ed Bishop and Mike Billington both were contractually
obliged to return, while George Sewell was not.

You'll also notice that a lot of other series regulars went missing
besides George Sewell. There was also Gabrielle Drake, Antonia
Ellis, Keith Alexander, Harry Baird, Jeremy Wilkin, and Georgina
Moon. I suspect they either didn't have contracts to return, or
simply were able to find work during the 6 month break.

Quite honestly I don't see why you find it implausible - I have the
impression that UFO was just a job to George Sewell; he appeared in
a lot of TV programmes back then.

I find it implausable its that simple. what other shows lost main characters during breaks, I cant see star trek loosing spock because Lenord Nemoy was offered another job, Alec Freeman was certainly a main figure in the show its not like he would not be missed, add to that the fact that George Sewell claimed not to remember doing UFO is strange you have to admit that. I am not saying anything against him just trying to work out what the thinking was and also did the producers think that we would not notice him gone.

I am just saying that an explanation would have been nice. My first question and the reason I raised this topic was simply to find out what people knew, speculation is always interesting but its nothing concrete.

Peace..................Straker.

Last year when Antonia Ellis was a guest at the
San Diego Comic Con, I asked her why she didn't
return for the second shooting block. Her primary
response was that she didn't know, but I almost
got the feeling that she didn't know at the time
that a second shooting block was even being made!

But at this point, it's really too late to figure
out what *really happened*. Nobody remembers
anymore...

Well - TV shows do lose main characters from time to time because
they want to do something else! Red Dwarf springs to mind, so does
M*A*S*H.

I don't think it's instructive to compare George Sewell's role in UFO
with Leonard Nimoy's in Star Trek; that part was career-defining to
Nimoy in a way that Alec Freeman simply wasn't to George Sewell.
Although it became something of a cult, UFO was just one of a number
of TV parts he appeared in; he probably didn't expect it to become
particularly successful.

It depends upon contracts between the actors and the studios. Both
Suzanne Somers (Three's Company) and Farrah Fawcett-Majors
(Charlie's Angels) challenged their contracts and were forced into
almost-cameo shots while other actors were hired to fill their places
(Jennilee Harrison and Priscilla Barnes in Three's Company, and
Cheryl Ladd in Charlie's Angels).

As for more modern shows, Mandy was one of the major
characters of the West Wing, and she disappeared at the
end of the first season.

I don't find it at all unlikely that even the lead actors on UFO were on
contracts which simply covered the period of time the series was expecting
to shoot. If so, when MGM British Studios closed and there was an enforced
gap in shooting, their contracts may well have run out.

British television contracts have always been different to those of US
series.
In the US it is common for lead actors to be on a contract which lasts
several years with the option to renew being entirely favourable to the
production company. This is largely because US series are only profitable
after a very large number of episodes are made and the producers cannot
afford for the actors to simply decide to leave a successful series before
the break-even point.

In the UK, series have traditionally had much shorter runs and even Lew
Grade, who had a very different outlook to other UK moguls, in that he made
the ITC series with international sales very much in mind, would not
necessarily have expected any series to exceed the initial 20-odd episodes.
Most didn't, The Saint and The Avengers being exceptions rather than the
rule.

As has been pointed out, most of the actors in UFO were fairly busy jobbing
actors, often appearing in other TV series or films and as likely to be
touring the regions in an Agatha Christie play by the time the second block
of shooting could be mounted as they were to be available. George Sewell was
appearing as a regular character in the Paul Temple series around that time.

For most of them, UFO would have been just a few days or weeks work, even if
it was spread over a number of months. Few of the actors would have had more
than a day or twos work on any given episode and would not have appeared in
some episodes at all. They may not have even been given a whole script -
just the pages for the scenes they were in. It's not surprising that, about
36 years later, their memories of UFO are blurred.

If their participation in the Pinewood shooting was obviously not going to
be possible then the actor may not even have been approached or their agent
might not have informed them if they were. Of course, there may have been
the odd actor who wasn't re-employed for reasons other than availability but
there is not necessarily anything sinister in anyone's non-reappearance or
their forgetting the circumstances.

Regards
John

The SHADO Amnesia Drug still works then, it would seem.

Fair point, though, that the series was over thirty years ago, and in the eyes of most, if not all of the cast, was just another acting job. As it only ran for a total of 26 episodes, they wouldn't have thought that it would be such a cult series in later years in the same way, as, say, Star Trek or Doctor Who.
