Amnesia Drug in 'Torchwood'

Did anybody pick-up on the shameless rip-off of the UFO amnesia drug
plot tool in the opening episode of Torchwood at the weekend? It was a
very UFO style storyline, i.e reveal your secret alien fighting
organisation to an outsider, then correct the damage by wiping her
memory by adminstering the drug over a friendly pint in the pub!
Actually I think they handled it rather well, particularly when Gwen
tries to fight the effects by typing her recollections into her
computer before she conks out. (Of course Torchwood wipe her hard drive
before morning -but I wonder how they would have got on had she used
old fashioned pen and paper?)

Yes. It was a shameless rip-off. I half expected them to make some reference to SHADO as
another organisation that had gone before them.
Did anyone spot a reference to someone looking like "Straker in 1999" on TOTP2 on Saturday
afternoon?

She did use old-fashioned pen and paper - there was "Remember" written
on a booklet next to her computer. Also they didn't wipe the memory of
that other copper whom she asked to do a search on Captain Jack
Harkness for her who mentioned it when passing in the corridor.

Ahem! Haven't seen the episode myself but an amnesia drug is
mentioned in the 1964 episode of Alfred Hitchcock Presents "Consider
Her Ways". Is UFO a shameless rip-off of this show? I'm pretty sure
there must be earlier references...

Barry
