Big O.... no UFO theme!

Hi all,

Well, I switched on "Big O" tonight, and although it was a season 2 episode
("Eyewitness"), they were using the season 1 theme music -- in other words,
there was *no* UFO theme rip-off music!

So what are these reports about the UFO music being heard on the Cartoon
Network, I wonder...

I watched the episode last night and even though they used the season one
theme at the beginning, the "UFO theme" did surface in the sequence where R.
Dorothy jumps on top of the car to knock the pipe bomb off of herself. That
music is so close to the actual UFO theme, it's hilarious.

i liked this episode, we had the more cliqueish thing of alien mind control in it, sure there is a lot of script holes in it, but i like to kick back and enjoy it, not analize the pleasure away.

That's a good philosophy to adopt when watching UFO I think. While
watching it, try not to worry about the logic of the plot too much.
But here on the list, I find nit-picking after the event quite
therapeutic .. ;)

'Psychobombs' is not one of my favourites, I'm not keen on all the
alien body-snatching/mind-control voodoo that became so popular
toward the end of the series, and the idea of human bombs doesn't
really work for me. I can accept mind-control reluctantly, but not
magic explosive powers, even after hearing Dr Jackson's
explanation. It wouldn't have been too hard, surely, to have
worked something more plausible into the script - perhaps a tiny
alien anti-matter device hidden in a wristwatch or something.

Also, this episode is notable for the brief appearance of another
vessel in the SkyDiver fleet (number 4, if memory serves) - the
only episode in the canon where it's established that there is more
than one SkyDiver, even though it's strongly suggested in most of
the episodes that there's just the one.

I liked very much this episode because of the idea of using the energy of
the human mind as a mass destruction weapon. Really is provoking and
exciting. Really it was the idea for a longer feature, perhaps a two- part
episode to develope it rightfully, don“t you agree?

Close, but it was SkyDiver 3 that got blowed up in that ep. Sky 4 was
mentioned in another ep, but I can't remember which. I think it was in the
air searching for something at the time

Hi All,

I am not new to the list but have been very busy. I suggest you check out the following site. Look especially at British Sci-fi and what was Space 1999 in the begining. Was this really Mr. Andersons original ideal? Can anybody add to the story. If only this original ideal was kept think of the stories!!! I hear they are trying to bring back space 1999 maybe it could be this ideal of a futuristic UFO if we bring our voices to bear on them. SITE>>>

I quote from the website:

----
Perhaps the ultimate achievement of British science fiction, Gerry Anderson
wowed audiences with his rival to Star Trek, Space 1999. The road to
production was difficult. Anderson was attempting to get the greenlight on
a second season of UFO, which was far more popular in the United States
than in Europe. The producers at ITC, in London, were no longer interested
in exploring that theme. Initially disappointed, Anderson managed to
negotiate an even larger budget for a new science fiction film series.
Undaunted by the rejection of UFO, Anderson detailed a scenario in which 19
years had passed and SHADO, the secret organization that fought aliens in
UFO, now inhabited an enlarged moonbase, equipped with advanced weaponry
for defending mankind. The new concept also involved launching the moon
away from Earth to directly encounter alien invaders before they neared the
homeworld.

Authors Christopher Penfold and Johnny Byrne hacked apart Anderson's
initial concept, originally called UFO: 1999, much to the dismay of Gerry
and his wife Sylvia who always had a close hand in her husband's projects.
------

There seems to be some liberties taken with the story here, unless this
person has evidence from back in 1973 that nobody else has, and the
interviews with the people involved (Gerry Anderson, Ed Bishop, Christopher
Penfold) are wrong. For example:

* He says UFO was far more popular in the US than in Europe. I can't say
that this was true -- UFO was pretty obscure in the US. Also supposedly
the reason UFO didn't go to a second season was poor ratings in the US.

* He says the producers in London were no longer interested in pursuing
UFO. Again, it wasn't that they weren't interested, as they did go-ahead
the initial work on UFO series 2. They stopped because of low ratings in
the US.

* What's his evidence that Penfold and Byrne "hacked apart" Anderson's
original UFO:1999 concept. They claim the concept was reworked by everyone
after UFO series 2 was cancelled.

* What's his evidence that Gerry and Sylvia were dismayed by what Penfold
and Byrne had supposedly done?

Thanks Nice link.

I agree it would have been something, after reading and finding out it was to
compete with star trek, I can see why it ended up as it did, very much like
ST voyager.
As a side I am suprised the andersons didn't think that martin landau didn't
do a good job. I prefer him over Robert culp any day.
Its also funny that they siad they wanted a strong silent type to be the lead
"Yawn!" so are we supposed to watch him brood and say noting for 45 mins -lol.

Any thanks Graet sight.
