Shado-cabinet - "I suggest you read the 'How it all Ended' fanfic it is very good. I do not see any harm in a fanfic writer filling in a plot-hole in an episode where it makes sense. You must remember the UFO series did not have a strict 'story bible' and so guest writers and directors appear to press their own vision onto the series such as the 'Alien theory' mentioned by Jackson in the 'Cat' episode (which was written by guest Director Dave Tomblin). This concept of Aliens being 'formless beings' who possess humans contradicts everything in the 'Identified' episode, and it is never mentioned again in the UFO novelisations, comic strips etc. So fanfic writers are correct in ignoring this 'Alien theory' of Jacksons's as that's what it appears to be just a theory."
Not sure that it actually contradicts it. It does add another dimension to it and we are talking about an alien race possibly hundreds or even thousands of years in advance of ourselves. Both techniques could be available to the Aliens... it's not really the place of an amateur fan-fic writer to be dismissive of something presented in the actual series, no matter how ridiculous and contradictory that thing may seem. And with regards the Alien engine block being put into the B142... I'm not sure that it does make sense, does it? It would be a bit like connecting a rocket engine to a tea-pot. Totally incompatible! |
Hi Clare
I agree the suggestion made by the 'How it all End's fanfic writer that a UFO 'engine block' was placed into a B142 to allow it too keep pace with the UFO travelling at SOL is a bit of a 'cop out' but it is better than the 'Close Up' episode suggesting that the B142 covered light-years of space to the Alien's homeworld in a few months using only its rocket engines which is too much of a plothole. As for Jackson's theory about the Aliens, since this was never explored in any of the UFO media (ie: novels, comic strips) its safe to assume that it has been 'dropped' from the canon (which is a good thing imho as it really contradict the very notion why the aliens are harvesting organs in the first place). But do not let these things put you off from read 'How it all Ended' (or any UFO fanfic) as it really is a good read. And like I said I think it is great that fanfic writers (like LightCudder) are keeping the UFO story alive with their work. |
TBH I always thought Close-Up was resolved by the aliens creating or utilising some form of spatial rift / wormhole like a warp drive. So long as B142 was close enough to enter the distorted space it wouldn't need a FTL drive.

And as for Jackson's theory... that like the Giger Alien the abilities of the Alien are determined by the host. So the Alien "meme" in a cat body had limited intellect and the Alien that comes in a UFO is a superior host to an Earthling - bio compatible with humans after some biochemical modifications so the spare parts worked. But with their spacefaring hosts dwindling in number and with losses due to SHADO they started using whole human hosts as disposable inferiors just to gather more spare parts.

Hi TRT
I think Jackson's theory could only apply to the aliens using abducted human hosts to use in suicide runs against the SHADO moonbase as the attack at the beginning of the episode suggests, and near the end where the SHADO pilot is being 'manipulated' by the 'Captain Cat' character to crash the interceptor into the moonbase. It just seems to be something the aliens were experimenting with as, like you suggested, in response to the mounting losses they are suffering trying to get past the moonbase in order to land on earth to harvest organs. |
