Biograpy of Straker

tchbnk
Hi all,

As you may know, the first DVD set of "UFO" was released in Japan on
June 26th.
In the same box, a color booklet is included, which carries the
articles, biograpy of Straker, Foster, Freeman, Henderson, Jackson,
Ellis, Harrington, Barry, and Bradley each.

In the first place, I would like to show you the text of Straker's
translated from Japanese into English.
I think the contents are rather in detail, I, however, wonder they
are based on Canon.
So please let me know your opinions.
Thank you very much in advance!

Kaoru

Cmdr. EDWARD STRAKER
Supreme commander Ed Straker
The supreme commander of SHADO, the defence organization of Earth.
Born in Boston, U.S.A. on July 10th 1940.
He was so brilliant that he received a degree in astrophisics from
Yale University, and conducted research on the Moon at Massachusetts
Institute of Technology.
The ex-colonel of the USAF, who experienced space flight aboard
Jemini 12 in December 1966 and Apollo 7 in 1968, and after that, took
charge of "Project Blue Book" at the Military Intelligence of the Air
Force.
He obtained evidence that UFO was an aliens' space craft according to
the "Karlin brother and sister affair", then proposed establishment
of the Earth defence organization along with General Henderson.
On behalf of the General, he attended the United Nations Defence
Committee, and nominated as the first Commander of the defence
organization.
Married with Mary in 1970, but he was busily occupied in establishing
SHADO, and was divorced from her just after their first son John was
born.
Straker leads the defence of Earth whose personality is composed and
calm, and he acts as a managing director of Harlington-Straker Film
Studios located in the suburbs of London ostensively.

There's a biography of Straker on the UK DVD set as well, one of the few
things I've looked at in the extra features section. It's completely
different from the details given in Chris Drake's UFO/Space:1999 program
guide, so I think these things are not canon as such. They're a fan [e.g.
Drake, or Chris Bentley] 's ideas of the character's history BASED ON what
was seen in the program.

Certainly, although I have read the biogs in the UFO/1999 book, I never let
them influence anything I did in my fiction. If there was a good idea, like
Bentley's one about Straker's father working at Roswell, then I incorporated
it, but my opinion is that my version of events is just as much based on
canon as theirs is, and therefore just as valid. I just watched for clues
in the show and the Robert Miall novels and worked the rest out myself.
More fun that way.

Incidently that UFO/1999 book also has Loooong biographies of Ellis,
Harrington and Barry, for those who seem to be interested. But I'd have to
transcript those on Word as my OE freezes if I type too much.

Speaking of which...
