After being rather busy lately, I somehow managed
to find the time to watch CONFLICT again.
The closing lines and acting are simply superb:
Straker, somewhat angrily, after General Henderson
failed to recognise what he meant by 'the Maddox
fund', says:
"If only you hadn't been so POSITIVE you were right!"
to which Henderson replies:
"What,.. like you?!"
At this point, Straker nods, knowing what the General
means; Henderson effectively forced the IAC's hands to
ensure Straker got the job, but did so knowing that
almost impossibly hard decisions would *have* to be
made, and those decisions *had* to be right; Straker
was the only man other than himself whom he thought
could do the job. The wonderful part is Straker's
offer to walk him to his car - simply an acknowledgement
of the fact that they are both doing jobs that they'd
simply prefer not to exist. Mutual respect from two
people that cannot allow themselves to be distracted
by emotion. Spock MkII & III.
