Marc! Thank you so much for saving this scene for me! I have always
thought it an idiotic scene to have in such a great episode. The stupid
pauses, the lines that don't gel together. You know. Anyway, now to see it
as it was originally meant to be... wow! I no longer view it as the
dippiest scene in UFO history. Thanks!

RE: COURT MARTIAL

Griff!
Hi all :)

John Burke (AKA Robert Miall) covered this extra part of the scene in his
2nd UFO novelisation UFO2. He was only given some of the early drafts to the
UFO scripts.

Pardon my ignorance. Was Robert Miall a pen name for John Burke? Afte all
these years I never knew that!! I have both books from early 1970 and it
never occurred to me that it might be a pen name.

Hi , just checking my UFO 1 and UFO 2, by Robert Miall, I found that
extra scene covered in UFO 1 Page 133. It would have been good for Court
Martial, after Alec decked Joe, with a 1-2 punch, to show Straker
meant business and wants address. Will watch Court Martial tonight, have
not watched it in long while. Elaine

Just finished watching the episode, which is nice to be able to do and
makes me more anxious than ever to get the second set. While it's
not the best episode, it certainly did not provoke the negative
response that some of the other listmembers experienced now or way
back when.

Seeing it again brought back memories of when I watched it the first
time. Back then, I didn't realize that characters were never killed off
(unless of course you were one of the nameless, red-shirted crewmen of
STAR TREK) and really thought Foster had been killed. Hey, I was only
in eighth grade at the time...

Anyway, seeing it now, I wondered how an organization could be so
paranoid, but then again it is the military, but even Henderson
managed to recognize that and gave the order to "take him alive" even
if only to kill him later. Seeing Straker go from being Commander and
assuming guilt to following his "gut instinct" and clearing Foster,
then the hurt and anger when he thought Foster dead, greatly added to
the depth and complexity of the character. There was even a bit of
psychoanalysis of Straker engaged in by Jackson & Foster. Which
reminds me...

Did whoever was planning a screen saver based on Straker's office
display ever finish the project?

Yuchy, my dear,

it's not on the DVD, it's in the script for COURT MARTIAL as Marc

One of the scenes cut (or not filmed) was where Straker and Freeman
threaten Singleton with some gasoline and a blow torch! Check it out:

So you have to imagine the whole scene for yourself by reading the
script (and I'm sure you'll like it :-)

Enjoy!

It's in one of the novels too, I can't remember which one .. but
the first time I saw COURT MARTIAL as an adult, I was convinced
it had been edited out - I seemed to remember having seen the
flamethrower scene years before. But, I hadn't, I'd just read it.

I'm glad it was removed actually - I think it would have been a
bit too 'heavy' (man). After all, selling equipment intended to
be used for personal or industrial espionage are quite legal, if
a bit dodgy.

Brings to mind one of the deleted scenes from PULP UFO FICTION.
Ed Straker uses his cigar to light Freeman's "flamethrower" and tells
Singleton "If you don't give me the name and address I'll have my boy

I'm with James on this one because I though I remembered Freeman
getting inventive with fire to get the guy to talk. I don't know if it was
to heavy. He was threating not actually doing anything. However Straker did
threaten to use the sonic gun on Jane Grant's eardrum and you have no doubt
he means it, so I see no difference in letting Freeman meaning to use fire to
make the industrial spy talk. I can see the networks flinching what with the
natual fear everyone has of fire.

Yuchtar,

Oh, come on now. Stanley Kubrick isn't that bad. After all he
did a nice job with Spartacus and Dr. Strangelove as well as A Clockwork
Orange.

Actually, Yuchy is really a closet Kubrick fan. After all the guy
was a cinematic genius.

Her favourite is actually 2001.
