gotta say for a young actress its a good career move to get into a sci fi series. Gabriel was already well established in TV but Im sure her role in UFO brought her a lot more fans and.... lets face it ... a cult status ! What is it about sci fi TV dr who, star trek etc... that they eventually become cult TV ? with an army of life long fans ! I guess Jane Fonda got the same status with Barbarella.. the cult sci fi movie |
"Gabrielle". "Gabriel" if she had a sex change. ; )

That's why Gene Roddenberry was able to get away with a lot of things he put
into Star Trek that he would have been crucified for if he'd placed it in a contemporary, US setting. The same for Rod Serling in Twilight Zone. Or Patrick McGoohan in The Prisoner. Some of the more controversial episodes of UFO would not have seen the light of day had the subjects that caused the controversy been canvassed in a realistic contemporary milieu. My take is that (some, usually older) sci-fi often *requires* you to think, unlike the endless trivial soaps (and I include most Hollywood films under that banner) which seem to act like George Orwells' "Soma for the masses." I have found that most of the people I've met who "don't like sci-fi" don't like having to think about things in general, either. ;) Sci-fi is also a superb way for writers to explore the human condition, without risking their audience being led away from the point by their own (current) cultural programming.
