Carlton DVD Recommendations for a UFO fan?

Marc Martin-2
Hi All,

Going *slightly* off topic... :-)

I see that Carlton has now available several ITC series available on
region 2 DVD. I guess I'm too young and/or too American to be
familiar with any of these series, but I *am* curious if there are
any of these series I might like. I guess it's apparent that my
tastes are such that I like "UFO", but I also like "The Prisoner" and
"Space:1999" Year 1. But what about these other series that I could
buy right now, but know nothing about?

The Champions
Danger Man
Department S
Jason King
Man In a Suitcase
The Persuaders
Randall & Hopkirk (Deceased)
The Saint

Any recommendations?

I personally really like all of them (with the exception of Man in
a Suitcase which is OK, but not particularly to my taste). None
has much in common with any of the Anderson series. I haven't
seen any of them for years though!

"The Champions' which is about a group of people who are granted
super powers by tibetan monks (or something - sorry, like I said I
haven't seen it for years!!) - they work for some elite
international intelligence organisation. Randall and Hopkirk was
recently remade by the BBC and is about partners in a detective
agency, one of whom is a ghost. Mike Pratt, who was in
Psychobombs (and whose son played bass with Pink Floyd on tour a
few years
ago, trivia fans!) played the non-deceased part. Wanda
Ventham was in the remake a few months ago incidentally.

All of them are essentially detective/crimefighting type shows.
The Persuaders featured Roger Moore and Tony Curtis and I'm sure
most people will be familiar with it. Danger Man featured The
Prisoner's Patrick McGoohan.

I personally always associate Department S with UFO as I think
they were on TV on the same night in the early '70s .. although
maybe only in the North-East of England.. Thursday night? Anyway
it's about a secret government department. I think that one of
the principal characters did the voice for one of the lesser
Captains in Capt Scarlet (Capt Magenta? Not sure). Jason King
was a spin-off from this.

I couldn't really recommend any of them to someone based on liking
UFO, Space 1999 & The Prisoner, but you might like them anyway! If
I had to nominate one, I'd say The Champions.

Cheers
James

I cannot say anything about the others, but The Persuaders is my all-time
No.2 (after UFO). You will not find food for deep thoughts in it, but it is
very funny and entertaining (personal opinion, of course).

If I remember well, it was broadcasted in Italy in the early seventies
(73/74), possibly between the two blocks of UFO episodes we had. It was
very popular here. Of course, because of dubbing we missed some jokes
between the English Lord (Roger Moore) and the Yankee self-made man (Tony
Curtis), but it was very nice anyway.

I picked up Danger Man. Excellent!

Some consider it the forerunner to the Prisoner (ie. John Drake is
the prisoner). But this is a subject of debate.
It's obvious now that Man from Uncle borrowed heavily from Danger Man.

The DVD has trailers for some the shows you list.
I'm surprised you haven't seen The Saint. It got a fair amount of
air time (here in the US) back in the 70's as did The Avengers. More
spy stuff, but I recall the twist was that Simon Templar (Roger Moore)
did his job without caring a gun. A good series, but I prefer The
Avengers (Emma Peel!).

I suspect Man in a Suitcase might be the other bet in the bunch.

Marc- you've never seen The Saint with Roger Moore? It's been on
here in the states quite a lot. I don't know if it still is, but it was running on Encore mystery channel, along with Secret Agent Man a.k.a. Danger Man.
And to answer someone else's question, the Prisoner IS John Drake. A
friend is in the movie poster business, and he's worked with lot of actors.
Patrick McGoohan told him that John Drake WAS the Prisoner, but they
didn't have the rights to the name, so they couldn't use it.

I'd like to get the Danger Man AND The Prisoner DVDs. I love both of
those series. Plus I'm dying to find out how region 2 discs play on my
machine!... :-)

Isn't that sort of like Secret Agent? With Pat McGoohan, only a half
hour? Or maybe that *is* Secret Agent and we changed the name when we
showed it here?

GREAT show! Roger Moore and Tony Curtis as playboys who just always seem
to attract trouble. :-)

> Randall & Hopkirk (Deceased)

You don't remember The Saint! Roger Moore as Simon Templar? They made a
new series with ......... damn, I knew his name till I started to write
it - oh! Ian Ogilvy, yeah, that's it. Great show. Simon Templar is a
dubious character - somewhat shady himself, but he goes around doing
good deeds and leaving a calling card of a stick figure with a halo - am
I right??

In the original novels written in the 1930's Simon Templar carried a thin
knife which he kept down his back. He would reaach into his collar and throw
the knif with deadly effect.

Marc-I'd certainly opt for THE CHAMPIONS-I've only got some second
generation video tapes but was a fan of this how from day one. It
features Stuart Damon as one of the leads who was also in a favorite
UFO episode MINDBENDER! Also, latch onto THE SAINT as well as DANGER
MAN(or as we called here in the USA-"SECRET AGENT") While they're at
it, they should do "THE SWEENEY" with George Sewell!!!!

Marc, I can only hang on to James Gibbons reply. I like all of
them too (I like the English TV series of that decate anyway) but I
would recommend you to try some eps of "Danger Man" and probably "The
Champions". There are some episodes starring actors and actresses
from UFO. I will check it out in the weekend and send you a list if
you like. Maybe other people are interested too?

It's funny that in Germany the "The Persuaders" became an instant
hit BECAUSE of the dubbing. The two guys are much more joking around
then in the english version (I was able to compare them because I own
all dubbed eps and some in the original language).

BTW are there any german speaking people on this list?

Well, Paolo, I also adore The Persuaders. Every Saturday night while
UFO was on in the States, The Persuaders was part of my own UFO
countdown. It would be on around 5 p.m. and UFO was on at 7. So,
naturally, they both have close associations for me. I have very fond
memories of the delightful Tony Curtis and the man with the independent
eyebrows, Roger Moore.

And, more recently, The Persuaders was on Satellite television and both
Sheila and I were able to see a couple of episodes. I do hope Granada
Plus will be show it again soon. I need the fantasy and escape very
much right now!!

I got the following ones:

Champions
Danger Man
Department S
Persuaders

I have the Prisoner boxed set coming shortly.

I did not remember champions or dept s, but they are OK. very similar in
many ways. Both have a team of 2 guys and a gal. Persuaders is good, but
dated (actually they all are dated). Danger Man is of course pretty good
even though they are the 30 min black and white episodes. The first episode
on the DVD was shot in portmerion where the Prisoner was filmed. Randall
and Hopkirk is a classic and worth seeing. Saint is OK, I have the recent
VHS tapes of these so I passed on the DVDs.

The DVDs have minor additions such as the cover of the ITC brochure and
some history of the shows.

Actually German dubbing is always done a lot better than French dubbing. I
used to watch The Saint (Le Saint :-) dubbed in French when it first came
out (I still pronounce Simon Templar the French way), quite confusing when
afterwards one sees (and hears) it with the original actors speaking. They
sound odd then.
I never like dubbing, mind you, but in France it seems one hears the same
voices over and over and over again.

I'm not German speaking but I speak German. Kind of. Started learning
German the same time I learned English, when I was 16.
