Space:1999 lost Barry Morse between seasons 1 and 2. In fact as
series 2 developed and the scipts and format got worse it got to the
stage where only Landau and Bain were from Season 1.
As for the children's show image, I think UFO fell between two
stools at the time. It was obviously aimed at children as the
marketing of toys and magazines testifies but I recall at the time
that Gerry Anderson's shows were seen as children's shows, not
adults shows. As Sylvia Anderson has pointed out there was a very
snobby attitude in british TV towards science fiction shows and
particularly those produced by Lord Grade's company which were
geared towards sales in the USA. Remember also that in those days
the concept of a cult following for a TV show hadn't really been
heard of. And these shows were envisaged to be shown only once with
a handful of repeats and that was to be that. Certainly no-one
envisaged that they would still be shown over thirty years later.Of
course as many of us here were those children of the 70's we're all
now adults and can see the adult elements contained therein but it
was all over my head back when the show was originally shown.
For the record my recollection of seeing UFO (and other shows like
The Saint)was at 1pm on Sunday afternoons after the thoroughly
depressing Weekend World.
