Clumsy Interceptors, ultra slow computers and ineffective defences

Mark Davies-3
I think Tasha that you should take the gritty realism you seem to embrace and foister it on something less worthy.

UFO like other series of it's time merely used the real world as a backdrop.
Although I think UFO would have been better in some respects had the producers put more thought into certain things,I always thought of UFO as a fantasy with Science Fiction elements .In much the same way Hammer Films were always portrayed as Horror ,but in fact were also fantasies.

In this way UFO is excused from having to have the realities and physics of the real world superimposed upon it.
Perhaps this is part of its character ,its charm and its
continuing appeal.

I agree, and whatever anyone feels about the show, it is always down to
individual interpretations of what one person feels as opposed to another, in my
opinion therefore UFO should not be dragged through the mud for all its
failings. As Tasha said it is a TV show after all is said and done. It's interesting
though to see just what people will argue about regarding this show.

Someone else mentioned going out on a limb regarding the second season of UFO
becoming Space:1999, this in fact correct, Gerry Anderson has said in
numerous interviews that the second season of UFO was meant to be concentrating on
Moonbase; the base was therefore going to be expanded to allow for the
possibilities of following UFO's back to their home planet and so on, all the sets were
built, actors were negotiating contracts and everything that you see now on
Space:1999 was meant to be UFO:1999 [this was the new title of the show].
However, negotiations between UK/US TV stations broke down before the show got
going and it was cancelled, Gerry then went to Lew Grade with the possibility of
saving the show in some other format as it seemed a waste of all the sets, the
time and money spent so far, it was then decided it should go ahead but in
different format and so they dropped the idea of UFO:1999, and called it
Space:1999 - imagine how great it would [and could] have been if negotiations had not
broken down. Much as I like Space:1999 and the actors in it, I would
personally have loved to have seen Straker et al in the positions, it would have been
great imho of course.

I also meant to say that UFO was made and shown in the early seventies so if
we are nit picking here, then yes the computers would be slow and cumbersome
because the producers etc not having the foresight to see into the future,
could only work with what they had, the same goes for trying to come up with
futuristic interceptors - heck, even having something as far out as a moonbase
back then was pretty wild. If it were set in today's world with the same
computers and interceptors as in the seventies then yes, you could argue that it was
cumbersome, lame, old etc etc ad infinitum, ad absurdum. But as I said
previously, it was a show of its time and perhaps people should look at it in this
way instead of trying to superimpose today's reality on a great SF show of the
seventies [even though it was meant to be 1980, and we didn't have
interceptors then or a base on the moon either] as it won't work.

Best to everyone.

The fun of this group is the nitpicking, but you are 100 percent correct. I
loved the show. When i was 8 the only thing i had to compare it with was Star
Trek. Gene Rodenberry was a pilot and much of the show was based on what he
thought the world would be like in the 24th century. That wasn't even used
until the Star Trek movie. The Andersons were more concerned with what was
happening on Earth in the late 20th century. I am 42 so I am in awe of both
shows and creators. I know I could not have imagined things half as good as they
did. Space 1999 is also an example of clumsy interceptors, slow computers ,
and ineffective devices. But I enjoyed it more because of the performances of
Martin Landau who doesn't ever talk about the show because of Barbara BAin. I
also fell in love with Maya . Unfortunatly the show was canceled just like
UFO because most Americans did not like it enough to write the shows
producers(they were divorceing any way) like they did Star TRek. scott

I just thought of something to tell you. I pretend that all the tv shows i
like exist in another dimension. Sometimes i imagine scenarios that take place
after the show ended. Try it sometimes you might like it. If you are a writer
you might want to write it down and email it to the other SHADO operatives.
That is what i call us. Scott

Obviously you haven't been to SHADO Library or any of the other sites that have UFO Fiction. We have several very good writers here in the group. Mac has the links on his main site or just google for UFO Fiction.
