In Century 21 magazine dated 1990,there is a question asked about different sized UFO models.
The answer to the question is that all the models built were actually the same design, just different sizes.
Well in fact I think thats wrong.
Its quite clear there were at least three sizes of the UFO made.A modelmaker working for Derek Meddings at the time indicates that he was involved in only making 2 sizes,
a 6in model and a larger one used for closeups and crashes.
He mentions the 6in model being used most of the time.
Photos on Marc,s site show that there were 2 sizes, although the 6in model is more likely to be a little larger than that .
I don,t think the wirespray photo on Marcs site is the large model the modelmaker was referring to.
This is obvious from the DVD,s of UFO .
If you look closely at the UFO,s that crash in episodes QOP,FP and Survival and compare them to the actual photos of the UFO model on the Starship Modellers site
you will notice that the bottom white plate lined with black stripes on the larger model is flatter and thinner.
Its sloping angles are much more acute and flatten off
very abruptly, while the black lines extend underneath onto the flattened part.
The picture on the Starship modellers site show that this plate is slightly deeper because the sloping angles are shallower and the black bars don,t extend onto the flattened
aspect, which is not as broad as on the large model featured on the DVD,s.
Not only this, but the clear canopy,s on the larger model are
not as well shaped as on the smaller ones.If you look at the
UFO on QOP you will quite clearly see this.
Also the paddles on the larger model are thinner in relation to its size, they are quite thin on the real model (Starship site) but probably just as thin on the larger model viewed
on the DVD,s,naturally they should be thicker..
My suggestion that there were three sizes is based on the fact that the wirespray photo on Marcs site has well shaped
and nicely rounded clear canopy,s ,so I don,t think its the
larger model,in fact I believe it is probably the intermediate
6in more likely 8/9 in model referred to by the modelmaker.
Some may find this subject interesting .For those that do,
please comment, particularly if you have any firm knowledge
that confirms or contradicts my suggestions.
