>But hey, that's democracy, and to quote Voltaire, "I >disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the >death your right to say it." Take a hike Rebecca.UFO is the best television series ever made. >The writing on the show is so bad that I can't believe I >ever watched this stuff at all. The writing is no better or worse than any other Television series of the time. The Invaders for example. You can easily appreciate in any TV series why certain things are written certain ways.To explain and move the story along.Actually its almost like spotting a continuity error. >Straker deliberately kills his own son because of a >mission that ends up failing anyway. Calling that heroic is >sick and anyone who says so shouldn't be allowed near >children at all. Ah! so the story got to you. Most people on here take a dislike to Mary as being a bit of a whinger who blames Straker for everthing, most of which is not his fault. In fact none of it is his fault. >Alec started out well, chatting up the women, seemed >like a fun guy. But by episode three he was little more >than a whining yes man to Straker. It's a wonder they >took so long to drop him. Actually George Sewell who played Alec Freeman had a commanding presence even when he was being a yes man. His inclusion made UFO all the better for it. >There's a 'he was only dreaming' episode, always a bad >idea. Its a bit of a cliche now to think that its a bad idea always to have a dream episode. >By the end of the series they were resorting to cleavage. >In the audio commentary, Wanda Wentham says that >people still ask her to autograph photos of her in the >purple shirt. Come on, guys, the woman's over seventy, >get a girlfriend! Wanda wsn't my favourite, but Timelash was by a fair margin the best episode (amongst many) of the entire series. >Everyone talks like Julie Christie in 'Darling' And what exactly is wrong with that. Its merely counterpoint to the dark undertones of the series. >Straker finally gets his hands on an alien, but injects him >with poisonous drugs after half a minute of interrogation, >one of the setbacks of insisting on stand alone episodes. Don't tell me you are a fan of the interminable LOST. The problem with Aliens of course is that they turn into a bag of wrinkles and die once exposed to Earth's atmosphere.Another idea to fit in nicely with the plot in that particular episode,Computer Affair. >The DVD enhancement shows that Straker wears blue >eye shadow. No one should ever take orders from a >man who wears eye shadow. How could such a person >be placed in charge of planetary security? Almost all shows at the time had an obsession with eye makeup, particularly those from America.UFO after all was aimed at the US. >There are some unncessarily futuristic features like >Straker's lavish bar. What's wrong with a bottle? And >no one should drink on the job. >The clothes are horrible. Everyone seems to be wearing >pyjamas. >All the smoking is disgusting and makes the show look >dated. >Dr. Jackson is a 100% creep. My skin crawls when he's >on the screen. Working for SHADO is not just a job.Its operatives are beyond both the civil and criminal law.Moral codes of behaviour, similarly take a back seat. The clothes made the show very unique. And try going to bed in one of those silver suits. I like the dated look with everyone doing un PC things, including smoking and women walking around in uniforms that reveal certain things that I am sure would have got a mention had viewers had DVD's or LCD's back in 1970. Uh! Thats exactly the effect Jackson is supposed to have. You know how I hate to touch anything slippery. >Ah well, there's always Stargate. Never watched it,never will. >Everyone talks like Julie Christie in 'Darling'
Makes a change from all the unedacted accents if various derivations seen now (especially in Oz shows - everyone's got an ocker accent. I was born in Oz and it irks me. because not everyone speaks like a bogan) >Ah well, there's always Stargate Yeah? A show where the female Major claims to be an engineer, and states in one episode that she can increase an engine's efficiency TO 130%!!!!!!! |
Uneducated - excuse the typo

Hi Mark, yes I will take a hike, looking forward to it this weekend actually.
By the way, I loved this answer of yours: "And try going to bed in one of those silver suits." That's creative, made me smile. I'm watching Season 4 of Stargate just now. Well worth it to broaden the old horizons a little. It lasted ten years, so it can't be all that bad. Have a nice evening, Rebecca |
Delurk...
Hello group. Maybe you had to live through the 70's to fully appreciate UFO for what it was and then fully appreciate British punk rock fashion which came at the end of that and stomped on all those awful styles, brown and orange and extreme colour schemes and sub psychedelic opart "Granny Takes a Trip" boutique Rock star chic. Out went bad hair, crazy moustaches, dung brown, flaaares man, ugh. In came coloured hair, spikey purple hair...leather, straight legged zipped bondage trousers, parachute tops. Hmm quite a few of Vivienne Westwoods Seditionaries designs could have been on the actors in UFO I think and not looked out of place. Silly premiss. In turn that was replaced with big hair, shoulder pads, enormous t-shirts, Kajagoogoo...What's LOST? As a child UFO was the greatest thing in the World to me. Even in black and white on a Greek subtitled screen in Cyprus. Maybe seeing the SHADO mobiles crashing through the woods and then finding I had been given a DINKY model in 71 or 72 for Christmas was pretty fantastic too. And I was given an interceptor. I don't see how anyone can seriously slag UFO or compare it with anything in the 80's 90's or the 21st Century. It's 70's high chic. UFO was 21st Century television in the 70's and seeing that start up splash screen used to make me shiver as a child with thrills. Also, the style of this show was still reflected in the real world. Anyone who has seen Randall and Hopkirk deceased, Jason King or yes The Persuaders, will nod their heads. Those appalling seventies fashionistas were every where. On the box and off it. Lavalamps. After hearing and seeing the end sequence of UFO I'd go and draw planets on the table with colourful felt-tip pens, and then go outside and sling tin-lids around on the waste ground outside, pretending they were UFOS. Cos I was 9 years old. Flying saucer attack! Yes.... A lot of the appeal for me in UFO does come from it's dating back in the 1980's from the late 1960's perspective. That is why, in my case, I'm not looking forward to a UFO revival at all, because it will lose that perspective. A modernized remake will ruin the whole appeal to me.
BTW- Greece Rocks!!!
