Dr Doug Jackson

More on the Chris Drake book: the edition I have was published in
the UK. I don't know whether there was ever a US edition. The ISBN
for this one is 1 85283 393 9. It was published in London by Boxtree
Limited in 1994. If you're interested in checking for it on eBay, I
recommend running a search on "Gerry Anderson UFO" to avoid all the
other UFO schlock floating around out there. As I said, I'd like my
own copy of the book for my little UFO collection. I don't generally
collect UFO memorabilia, but I do collect magazines that contain
useful info about the series (plus any with Michael Billington
interviews, hopefully illustrated with shirtless photos of Paul
Foster). Incidentally, the Episode guide in this Chris Drake book
is, in my not-so-humble-newbie-opinion, not as good as the one
published several years previously in the Fanderson "Century 21"
magazine.

An odd thing about the book is that there is a still from the episode
about the Alien crash-landing in rural England and setting up a
transmitter in a blind woman's cottage (sorry, I can't recall the
name of it offhand--I may not own a video of this one). My memory of
the show is that we never actually got to see the Alien, but in this
still (on p. 21) you see a dramatic shot of the actor in the Alien
space suit covered with green pancake makeup. He looks quite
alarmingly sinister.

My favorite segment of the Drake book, so far, is the biography of
Dr. Doug Jackson. Here's a snippet from it:

"The enigmatic Dr Jackson is SHADO's very own man of mystery.
Despite his extremely English sounding name, his east European accent
[I think of it as a "Forties Peter Lorre accent"--S.] indicates that
it is certainly a pseudonym, most probably adopted, in order to cover
his tracks. Very little is known of his background prior to his
joining SHADO, although some believe that he defected from Russia
sometime in the 1960s, bringing with him a wealth of knowledge
accumulated during his time in their secret service. His movements
during the 1970s are not well documented, although it is almost
certain that he was connected with the British secret service in some
way, and a character answering his description is reported to have
been present at the debriefing of several Russian defectors and
spies. It is not until 1979 that a clear record of his employment
begins when, in August of that year, he joins the International
Astrophysical Commission as security advisor and psychoanalytic
consultant to SHADO."

I thought that was a rather arch way of explaining Jackson's presence
in the scene. I love thinking of him as SHADO's very own man of
mystery!

Sounds like an interesting book...

In 'real life' Vladek was eastern European (Polish), so his coming to
Britain _might_ have had some political/cold war aspect to it. Must
find out...

Hi Steve,
The episode with the alien in the blind woman's house was A Question of
Priorities.
I loved the character profile of Dr. Jackson from the Chris Drake book.
I had alway thought that the way he played it reminded me of Peter Lorre in
the the Hitchcock film Secret Agent(1936). Jackson wouldn' t have to be
double agent. It is the practice to have spymasters set up a network in
other countries by recruiting people from that country. He probaby had to
come over to the west when his cover got blown and that is the reason for
using the Jackson alias.
Any back ground info on Gay Ellis, Nina Barry or Joan Harrington in the
Chis Drake book?

Seems I called a book store somewhere here in the States when the book
first came out and was told they would call me when they came in, but
never got a call and never really had the money anyway, so I never
called back. <shrug>
