Eclectic 21?

So, the Eclectic 21 convention is presumably over... did anyone go?
Did Ed, Mike, Sylvia show up?
Anything of interest to UFO fans?

I know some of the folks over on the B7 lists did. If we don't get any
firsthand reports here, I'll see whether any of them tore themselves away
from the B7 guests enough to note anything UFO-related.

Hi Marc,

Since I only found out about the convention through a
link from your UFO website, and wouldn't have known
about it or gone to it otherwise, it's probably only
fair to post a report.

(The organisers of the con will apparently be posting
info - including pics - on the con website asap, btw;
all the sessions mentioned below were videoed, but
don't know if the videos will be made available).

Sylvia couldn't make it, but both Ed and Mike
attended. Both the guys had individual hour-long
interviews with the con organisers, with questions
from the audience at the end, as well as a session
together on 'UFO memories', on Saturday afternoon.
They also did a very enjoyable joint running
commentary on the episode 'Kill Straker' on Sunday
afternoon. (I'll try to remember some of their
comments if the episode is discussed later).

The video rooms showed various episodes of 'UFO', as
well as other of Mike and Ed's film and TV
appearances. For Mike, this included starring in the
film 'KGB: The Secret War', and on TV in 'The
Prisoner'; also shown was the film starring David
Essex, 'Silver Dream Racer', which Mike wrote. Ed's
appearances shown included those in 'Journey to the
Far Side of the Sun', '2001: A Space Odyssey', and an
episode of the TV series 'The Professionals'.

For myself as a fan, it was great to be able to talk
to the guys in 'real life'. Mike's sense of humour,
which I don't think comes across in the character of
Foster in 'UFO', was particularly enjoyable.

I didn't take any photos myself - it seems a bit
intrusive - but should soon have a couple of photos
the con photographer took of me with Ed and Mike,
always assuming anyone wants to see them. But if there
is one particular image that stays with me, it's from
the 'UFO Memories' session. Mike recalled that when
he, amongst others, came to audition for the part of
Foster, he had been flattered when Ed told him
afterwards that he was the best man for the job. 'But
you _were_ the best man for the job !', says Ed - and
the two shook hands, to much applause.

A very enjoyable weekend, with much more to it -
especially the social stuff, obviously - and lots of
other sci-fi (especailly Blake's 7), 1960s and cult TV
guests, videos and discussions. But the above only
begins to outline the UFO-related stuff, and a whole
con account would take a weekend to read !

Not intrusive in a convention setting - try getting a fast speed film
and not using a flash ...

Thanks for the report, Andy!

So I wonder if there is going to be an official
convention video? Or if not, if there is some way
that we can get our hands on a copy of the video
that was shot of the sessions with Ed & Mike?
It would be nice if could put up a transcript
on the web, like was done with Ed & Gabrielle
at Century 21 -- Lorraine Meyer has already
volunteered to do another transcription, but she
needs something to transcribe!

And I would certainly like to see any & all
photos of Ed & Mike from the con, and hear
any more details of what they said!

Afraid not, though Gareth Thomas ('Blake') and
Jacqueline Pearce ('Servalan') both did hour-long
individual Q & A sessions, and another hour of 'Blakes
7 memories' with Frank Maher, a stuntman who worked on
the show. Gareth also did some readings from
Shakespeare for the 'culture vultures.' Unfortunately,
I didn't get to go to any of the 'Blake's 7' stuff
because of scheduling conflicts with the 'UFO' stuff,
but still appreciated their attending the con, and
having the privilege of rubbing shoulders with them in
the bar or the lift.

Andy

I've put up a message asking the con organisers about
that at the 'Eclectic 21' web site, so hopefully will
get a response. (The web site seems at least as active
now, with post-con reports and photos due to be put
up, as well as a message board, as it was before the
con ! Well worth a visit).

<<And I would certainly like to see any & all photos

I'll try and recall some of what was said at the Mike
Billington and 'Kill Straker' sessions and post that
(not word for word, obviously, but hopefully getting
an accurate enough gist of what was said).

Regards,

Andy

Hi Marc,

Yes, Mike and Ed did indeed turn up and from what they told me, they both
had a blast - I have only just got back from the event so when I recover and
collect my thoughts, I will gladly share them with you all. Just a couple of
points, Sylvia at literally the last moment could not make due to urgent
work commitments - pity, and secondly, Paolo Malaguti did attend the event
and he will have a load of pix which he will put on this sight. You must all
remember, I was an organiser of this event. so I did not have the luxery of
taking any pictures but others did, and as soon as I get some, I will put
them on this sight.

For any one who is interested, both Mike and Ed are a dream to interview -
the UFO memeories slot which we had on the Saturday afternoon was a
paricularly memorable event since both Ed and Mike talked together for about
an hour on their recollections of the show - for those of you who missed it
which I gather is virtually all of you
:-(, you really did miss a moment to remember.

I will be back with some of my own recollections very very soon.

Be groovy.

John

Which reminds me .. in The Responsibility Seat when a young
black female SHADO operative brings Col Freeman a coffee, with
the words "black, with sugar", he replies "just how I like it".
Can't help thinking an opportunity for subtle innuendo was
narrowly missed there. Maybe she should have said "all yours

Yeah, that image of Alec giving her one of his smiles was burned into my
brain (must have a CD for grey matter) at an early age.

I remember Gerry talking at great length about how the Southern US gave
him a hard time when there was a black puppet in one of his shows. How
sad. And it's lovely by the time UFO rolled along he could get away
with positive racial issues without too much fuss.

LOL!!! Well, when I first watched UFO I saw it in such a jumbled order
that I didn't get this affliction! It seemed such a natural thing to do
to replace him with Colonel Lake!!! Yes, I know, it sounds bizarre;-)

Ah see...I tried to tell you didn't I??!! He's a very hard act to
follow IMHO. And NO - I can't take to the Col Lake character at all but
that's just my own opinion.
