Hi all,
Helen Weber has forwarded me Ed Bishop's clarification of his earlier
statements which a few people disagreed with here:
-----
to reply to the question as to the programs popularity. In reply, I
thought what was it that made me favor one program over another. I took my
best ever favorite TV show and asked myself what I saw in it that made me
return to it time and again.
That program (The Sopranos, by the way) offered me no danger. I was not
going to be confronted with any repulsive or objectionable visual images.
My sense of moral balance was not going to be upset by any completely
upsetting action on the part of the major running characters (Tony S. for
example, abusing his teen aged daughter. Or son.). It follows that I will
feel comfortable in this format. I know the characters. They are like
comfortable shoes. I may be surprised occasionally by their reactions. I
may be "anxious" for their safety but, mainly, I know what they think and
feel.
Finally, I am not going to be challenged in any way. No matter how complex
the plots may twist and turn, no matter how extraordinary the characters
may develop, I know that the Sopranos is a story of good vs evil. It's
true that the edges may get a little blurred occasionally and that violence
may splash onto an innocent character very rarely but at its heart it is
about good vs. evil, loyalty, friendship, and all the virtues that I hold
dear that will be be challenged in a demanding way.
That, in my humble opinion, was more or less the same reasons to explain
the popularity of UFO. I may be wrong, or only half right but, heck, what
do I know? Anyway I hope I have clarified my statements a little bit and
have cleared up any confusion.
-----
So, it would appear that he wasn't even thinking about UFO when he made
that statement!
