Ed Bishop Voiceover, Late '60s

James Gibbon

BBC 4 showed Harold Baim's 'Britain On Film' earlier this evening.
Baim was a film maker who made short films about British locations
between the '40s and the '80s, to be shown in cinemas.

The clip with Telly Savalas putting a positive spin on Birmingham
in the late '70s was priceless. But some readers will be more
interested to see the clip of his film based in London, which (I'm
pretty sure) is narrated by Ed Bishop. Looks like it was made
around the same time as UFO too, give or take a year or two (I'd
guess '67, from the cars and fashion).

Available on the iPlayer at http://t.co/5HHaUXj - but possibly not
to viewers with non-UK IP addresses. Ed can be heard about 23
minutes in.

"Park Lane! A world of idle luxury. Caviar, footmen and red plush
curtains, for those who can pay the bill". That sort of thing.

James,

Good find. I agree that this was Ed narrating. I think, however, that the film itself was about 1962 judging by the theatre and films shown. West Side Story and Follow that Dream were released in 1961 and 1962 respectively and Boeing Boeing was on at the Appllo in 1962. Of course the film may not be all of the same period.

Hi,

Thanks for the heads up with this. Absolutely priceless :)

Boy, and they thought London was congested then... I think life was a lot simpler then, although I doubt 'they' would have agreed.

It was strange how they intertwined the voice-over artists during the adjacent segments.

Best, G

Yes. I think that may have been the BBC combining excerpts from
two different films. Probably not the sort of thing that Baim
would have done back then, but perhaps I'm wrong about that.

I love to see clips of London in that era. They may not have had
mobile phones, DVD players, a well-developed motorway network, the
Internet or even colour TV back or home computers then, but it
still seems like a better time.
