Ed Bishop on Kenny Everett

Scott Kellogg
Hi All,

I was looking up some stuff on Kenny Everett and ran across a brief bit with Ed
Bishop in a comedy sketch. He appears as a New York Police officer. Sadly, he
doesn't get any funny lines, but you can tell it's him.

Kenny Everett was on from 1978-81, so this is what Ed would have looked like at
the time of UFO.

I often wonder what Hugh Laurie's American accent (on 'House' of course)
sounds like to an American. Perhaps one of our LeftPondian contributors
can tell us!

It sounds very believable to me. I was watching the outtakes on the
Season 2 DVDs, and I find it amazing that he stays in his American
accent even when a mistake has been made.

Frankly, I've found plenty of brit actors who had me plenty fooled; that guy from BG2 who plays Capt Apollo right off the top of my head....what's his name?

That would be Jamie Bamber, and he had me fooled for the longest time as
well.

I know this is really OT, but if you want a 'REALLY' bad american
accent, listen to Eddie Izzard in 'The Riches - TV series' ... it's
truly cringe-worthy. I am a big fan of Eddie as a comedian, but this
accent really stinks!

Best to all :)

When I first saw Jamie Bamber it was on the Hornblower
movies and I heard his lovely public school accent
before anything else. He has an unfair advantage with
the American accent, his dad is American, from Detroit
as I recall. So that would make him more like Ed
Bishop's children (to keep this close to on topic).

FYI The real reason that American actors were cast as leads in many 60's
and 70's British TV series and especially those produced by ITC was to
make the programs more marketable in the the US, it had nothing to do
with who could do good American accents...the same principle applied in
some UK made movies as well. Many of my friends / colleagues never
realized that Hugh Laurie was British until they saw him out of
character at awards shows etc.
