Hi All,

Paolo Malaguti has e-mailed me a UFO behind-the-scenes photo which
shows Ed Bishop's double in Timelash:

Thanks Paolo!

Whaaaaaaat?!?!
Bishop had a double??? For the energetic scenes?? What a wuss!!!

Now that's out of the way...
Yes Marc, sorry Marc, I'm a bit tied up with work this year and have
switched to digest mode so I am pretty sporadic in my posts on all
lists. My PA Ms Rodgers (clearly Miss Ealand reincarnated!) has been
keeping me informed (I'm gonna have to pay her a salary soon!) and I
gather you muttered that I hadn't commented on Identified.
Particularly as I'd been the one agitating for the ep discussions to
start again. Er... I only *championed* the idea Marc... lots of other
people wanted to play too. And I see they have. So I'm not sure I
have much to add, but...

That's libellous... I would never...
except... :-D

I saw UFO when it was first broadcast 30 years ago. I saw Identified
for the second time when I got it on video last year after I joined
FAB UFO and discovered the series was available. I realised that
although I remembered the intro with Carlin's sister being taken, and
then the scenes with Henderson and Straker in the jet, the car and
the crash, I thought the scenes appeared later in the ep. In my mind,
I remembered the opening sequence as Ayesha sashaying towards the
office block, Straker driving up in his car and stalking through
reception to his office. That absolutely imprinted on my 8 year old
mind.

Watching it again last year, I sat wriggling in anticipation as
Straker drove up, parked, got out and... what an oik! tossed his fag
end on the ground. Lout! Suddenly Straker, tall pedestal and big fall
all ran into one sentence! What a difference in social behaviour 30
years can make! And leaving his briefcase on Ms Ealand's desk for her
to carry in. Exhausted after a saunter in from the car, was he? Or
couldn't manage two props at one time?? <vbeg>

It improved from there! It's a classic series-setting opening episode
isn't it? We get all the main characters (not Foster obviously since
he was patched into the series later), we got an indication of all
the character traits - cold Straker, warm and fuzzy Alec, Ford trying
terribly hard and displaying perfect foot in mouth technique... while
he was being used so Straker could reinforce all we, the viewer, had
learnt (secret operation 80ft below a movie studio etc). But after
watching the West Wing opener the other night... haven't scene-
setting episodes come a long way. Made UFO look distinctly ponderous.

We got the intro to all the hardware... and software... wasn't Gay
doing a strip before the Yellow Alert a bit gratuitous??? Did you
think so boys??? All that beautifully toned leg she was flashing??
And all the female SHADO operatives were terribly well spoken gels
who'd clearly been recruited straight from Cheltenham Ladies College!

Odd comments...
Gay Ellis's conical boobs... what *was* she wearing??? Had the
Wonderbra been invented??
And applying lippie while on duty?!?! Surely not!
Was SID the forerunner of Blake's 7's Zen?
Virginia Lake looked in style and manner like a blonde Emma Peel.
And I suppose the Straker lower body area is entirely OT? :-D

Changing tack:
I saw some of the presidential inauguration ceremony on tv yesterday.
I wonder... if at some stage the existence of SHADO became known...
and the world became aware of Straker et al... d'you think one of the
US parties would have pressured him to become a candidate? After he'd
vanquished the aliens and retired? President Straker by 2001???
Discuss!

Also...
Sheila, I think, was talking about Straker as a (un)common name.
there's
www.strakerand.co.uk
and there are five Strakers in our local phone directory. So not
*that* uncommon a name. And I know a racehorse owner called Ivan
Straker.

There's a Paul Foster namesake who's been on tv this weekend in (dear
God!) an Indoor Bowls championship. Jeez. The BBC are short of sports
coverage in winter. However it did give rise to some bizarre
pronouncements from the commentator: "Paul Foster looking for a front
toucher here" and possibly even better... "Paul Foster proved well up
to it on this 17 second mat this evening".

Yeah. Figures!
And this Paul Foster was folicularly challenged up top too... though
did seem to have a small bathmat peering over the neck of his
poloshirt!

What the hell am I talking about? Go...

I think I've bored sufficiently. Till the next ep!

Wow! Shatters my illusions - I thought Ed did all his own stunts! ;-)

Thanks, Marc! Thanks, Paolo!

Carly had a lot to say about Identified and some bowler guy named Foster
and then:
