Ok I am sure this has come up before, but I have to ask, its been
playing on my mind for quite a while now. Whats happening about the original Straker Car that was last recorded as deteriorating in Birmingham. Sounds like a ground up restoration job, and ultimatly a Museum, such as the excellent one in Coventry. Does anybody know its exact location, person to approach etc.We should at least attempt a rescue mission. Yours Seriously Alan |

I have not heard any updates about Straker's car in 9 years, so I assume that it continues to deteriorate in someone's backyard. I don't know where it is located, but I do know that the owner has NOT been receptive to selling it. Certainly over the years I've been emailed by a few people who would be thrilled to buy it and restore it, but it doesn't do any good if the current owner is not willing to let it go. Marc |

Here is a photo from back then: http://ufoseries.com/jeffSmartVideo/mystery5.jpg Jeff was planning on releasing a documentary video which included Straker's car, but this documentary was never released. I have come across the phenomena before of eccentrics whom are happy to let unique vehicles Rot away in their Gardens, but this does not make it Right!. Its about misguided respect for things that matter to others. Like Mr Grade for example, is there anybody out there whom works for the BBC and can actually get this man to read this Email? Mr Grade, your late father was indeed a man of his time, and I do not expect you to follow or recogonise his accomplishments in quite the same way, however, when Patrick Mc Gohan walks into his office and walks out with the 'Prisoner', this is a GOOD thing Micheal. When Gerry has a chat with your Dad, and out pops the 'Protectors', this is a GOOD thing Micheal. And as for UFO the cast was set, this is a VERY GOOD thing Micheal. I know you appear to have some strange issues with Sci Fi, perhaps you chocked on a Captain Scarlet figure as a kid... I really dont know or particularily care. But was does Nark me is the fact that even you should realise theres a target audience of Fans out ther that at least deserve a UFO theme night or weekend on the BBC , we bloody well pay for it!. Buy out that chap whom wanted to make the TV special in the late 90s, he must have a wealth of material. Chase up the Straker car and Buy it with our money, restore it, and put it in a Museaum. Its about tiome you really recognised your Fathers acheivements, shame on you.I suspect I could teach you a few things about television, and what people really want to see. Alan Noorkoiv. Coventry |
Alan,
Lew Grade was Michael Grade's uncle, not father. Michael Grade is now at ITV not the BBC. Regards John |

One invariably makes errors when in the middle of a Rant! its a great British Tradition!!. Micheal should still be ashamed, and has played on his uncles achievments in the past (to the point where I really did think it was his Dad!)And he's jumped from so many networks its dizzying!. He has had more opportunities than most, and is still beholding to Lew's fabulous heritage; of course its just my oppinion. I remember in the 70's ITV went crawling back to Gerry because Tom Bakers Dr Who was doing so well in the ratings, hence 'Space 1999' was born, so forget Primeval for Gods sake!, isn't it about time Gerry was approached again?. A bit of History repeating itself perhaps.. |
Sorry to be pedantic, but Space 1999 was being conceived and filmed long before Tom Baker was even considered for Doctor Who.

1999 was used by ITV to try and compete in the ratings with Doctor Who, and got thoroughly trounced. Mainly due to the fact that ITV treated ITC shows as filler, and would not network them.

Only when it went to air did ITV mess it about. |
