Yep, I remember Gerry saying (jokingly) that he wished he could have afforded to
blow up a real Rolls Royce.

UFO was actually different to all the other Anderson productions, effects-wise.
Up until then, the puppets were made and filmed in one studio, and down the
road, the effects work was done in another. "The Secret Service" was their last
puppet show, so it meant Derek Meddings and his team could take over both
studios, as the live action was shot at Borehamwood and Pinewood. This meant the
model sets and the miniatures were much bigger than any of their earlier work.
Sadly, after that, they all moved on and things like "Space 1999" were made by
different team at Bray.

So in answer to your question, all effects were done as miniatures, apart from
one in the pilot where Derek set up real charges along the road to blow the
Rolls Royce up. (The crash was a model though.)
