Valentine Dyall would have been great as the voice of SID, but unfortunately he's dead now. He was the voice of Deep Thought computer in "Hitch-Hiker's Guide To The Galaxy." Amazing voice!!!!

How about Reflections in the water?. There's a UFO scorch mark on the floorwhen Ed & Mike get into the undersea dome. I guess a UFO must be about 15ft to 20ft in diameter.

Yes, although compare that to A QUESTION OF PRIORITIES, when that little
escape pod comes out of the bottom. That pod needs to fit at least one
Alien inside, which I would think would make that particular UFO pretty
large...

Throughout the UFO series we never get to see an Alien Pilot directly
enter or exit the spacecraft.

If the craft is that small, the interior would be genreally the size of
an Apollo Capsule? Where are you going to put your captives? I believe
you can have the same general exterior design - and still make it possible to
have one man capsules - six man crew - forty man battleships.

We saw an exscape capsule launch from the bottom of the craft and land
safely. The interior must have been able to house the escape pod and the
crew compartment.

There are a few artists concepts of UFO cutaway views of the interior.
Each depicting a different overall exterior size.

Intersting topic.

Good point, but we have planes and helicopters that are different sizes ( and warships, destroyers, aircraft carriers ) I like to think that the UFOs came in different sizes.. for particular missions ( Works better than realising that the continuity was poor!)
Hmmm...... Story coming up now!!

Hi,

You can gestimate the size, as the wheels, tracks and drive gear are the same mechanics as in the SHADO Mobile.

Hope this helps,

Griff

And the Mobiles in turn were constructed on the chassis of a commercially available scale model of a particular  WW2 German tank, right?  Anybody remember which tank?  Should be easy to figure from there,I would guess.  Although I still like the idea of there being different sized UFOs (gotta have a station wagon sized one to take the kids on those weekend jaunts, right?).  ; )

Speaking of actual UFO details-

Has anyone ever seen any preproduction art or early sketches
of the UFO's themselves?

I was always a bit more intrigued by the UFO's themselves
rather then the SHADO hardware. I've always seen Mike Trim art about
the interceptors etc. but never how the UFO designs came to pass.

Have I missed this somewhere?

Brian

Ummm, no, I don't think pre-production sketches of the UFOs
have ever been published... (or if they even exist)

There are a couple of drawings by Phillip Rae, and I do seem to remember something by Derek. I have uploaded them and some other UFO craft related bits on here: http://tinyurl.com/34gs9co

Anderson recalls, "The shape of the UFO was certainly something that we went into in great detail. The feeling was that everyone at that time saw UFOsas saucers and, you know, . we found ourselves thinking about the old argument that if you hold up a teacup and say to somebody, 'This is a telephonein the 22nd century: they will always say, 'No, it isn't, it's a teacup! So with the UFOs, we were anxious that people should instantly identify themwith UFOs and so we decided to keep what had become the classic saucer shape."

In a 1993 interview, Derek Meddings remembered, "I knew that in my mind, ithad to be something that was a little unusual and, having looked at all the photographs that had been taken - you know, all these great photographs you see - you never see one that's clear, do you? They're all a bit fuzzy, which always makes me suspect that somebody's been tampering with them, so Iwanted to bring that
quality to our UFOs, spinning and reflecting light as they spun so that they were a bit fuzzy and indistinct.

I think I came up with the final shape and that sort of design because I had to think how it was going to work, and it was a shape that was quite difficult to actually get to spin. I drew it out on paper and then we made a model up and tried it out, and that's how it came about really. I came up with the idea that the top part would be made of thin Perspex which was blown over a wooden frame. The Perspex dome then had a motor fitted inside it which was powered down the four wires that we used to suspend the model in theair. This top section was then connected to the bottom part which was turned by the motor so that the whole of that bottom part spun while the top was locked off.

"I put little paddles all around the circumference of the bottom section and covered them with highly reflective tape so that when it was going around, the paddles caught the light. That made it flash and strobe in the camera, giving the flying saucer an ethereal look to it so that you wouldn't really be aware of what you were looking at. The problem was that when we came to film them, we found that once they were hanging on the wires, we kept having to balance them, sticking bits of Plasticine on the back of the paddles because, for some unknown reason, they would start wobbling when we set the motor going. We couldn't get them to bank either, because the minute youbanked it, it stopped revolving, so we always had to shoot them travellingin a straight line."

The reason they couldn't bank them was they had in effect, created a gyroscope, which has it's own internal inertia. There are still arguments amongstmodellers as to exactly how many paddles the UFO had, and whether there was a gap in one place for a "door".

Hope that helps,
Rob

The mobile was designed around a "Tiger Joe" radio controlled toy tank. This was used a lot by Meddings for the larger tracked vehicles in Thunderbirds, Captain Scarlet and Joe 90.

That's interesting, but in response to Jeff's point: I don't think we
can draw conclusions about the UFO size from that. It doesn't follow
that the same scale in effect for the tank model is intended for the
UFO.

I realize that this may perhaps be a stupid question, but; is the "UFO size", question pertaining to the actual size of the UFO Minatures used in "UFO"; or is it a question of what the Full sized (life sized), UFO's were supposedly...??

The "actual" size is what we are talking about here. There are plenty
of behind-the-scenes photos available to indicate the size of the
models, and those models varied in size quite a bit. I think the
largest model may have been the one that crashed into the ocean on a
QUESTION OF PRIORITIES, as that had the escape pod that had to be to the
same scale.
