Fw: [SHADO] SID INTERIOR

Ed Top
Do you think one of the reasons they used reel-to-reel tapes at SHADO is because
it enhances the impression of a "busy" looking workplace? Another more likely
reason is that they just couldn't predict Hard Drive units with non-moving parts
in the future!!

I think the interior of SID looks excellent - "colourful emptiness" - and is a
great example of the quality of design in the show. The spareness of the design
makes it look very enigmatic and, as you say, much less dated than the computers
in SHADO HQ.

I remember Gerry saying that he wasn't happy with the interior of SID because it

looked like a "telephone exchange" or something. Ironically, SID's interior
looks so much better than whirling reel-to-reel tapes at SHADO. I think it's
because a lot of things nowadays are on Hard Drive and there's an ever
decreasing need for 'moving parts' in technology.

Re: Fw: [SHADO] SID INTERIOR

.
in timelash the reel to reel tapes have holes punched in them, a way to read digital code.
if the reels were of a specific material and the electronics shielded it would guarantee safe operation, even in floods and emp from nukes. there are still hard card computers used for those reasons. they last long, are easy to repair and almost impervious to normal damage.

Actually, on the floor of that control room, facing the rack of tape readers, just below SID's speaker on a pole, there is a big square box that holds a 24" hard drive that we can see spinning in some episodes...   The first "hard drives" had that look but you didn't get to see the actual disk. But non-moving parts, even today, are a rarity. But not for long I am told! §:c)

To quote another movie.. if allowed :)

From Remo Williams, the adventure begins.

When walking through a room full of computers, Remo asks?
"I thought they made computers smaller"'
"Those are the smaller ones"
