Fw: [SHADO] SKY ONE & VOLCANIC ASH

Excuuuuse meee, but UFO was set in 1980. We didn't know about the effect of volcanic ash on jet engines until 1982, thank you very much!!!!!

All The Best,

Because it was supposed to be set in the "Future" (whatever happened to all
these rocket boots we were supposed to be getting. I want my pair of
rocket boots :-)) then SHADO (and most likely the Military as well) would have
known of the affects of this and would have done some fancy technological
jiggery-pokery to the engines in order to make them able to cope with
whatever strange weather or environmental effects that might occur. It's
something like that bit from one of the Treehouse of Horror Simpson Episodes
(Featuring Comic Book Guy as the Collector) where Lucy Lawless is at a Xena
Convention and after listening to the fans picking out all the faults and
continuity errors in the series tells them "Whenever you see something like
that, a wizard was responsible" . So in this case if you see anything like this
Technology did it :-)

So that means in 1980, jet planes could fly through ash clouds? or are you saying a plane crash because of volcanic ash was attributed to something else?? :)

What I'm saying is that I'd NEVER heard of volcanic ash clouds affecting jet engines before 1982. I don't know what information SHADO would have had on the subject in 1980 (virtually nil, I should imagine).

Any volcanic ash cloud before 1982 appears to have been situated where planes could easily fly around it. The current Icelandic ash cloud blowing across Europe is unfortunately in the direct path of aircraft, making it difficult to give it a wide berth.

All The Best,

BRIAN
