Here are some more comments from Christian Jenisch about the new
Italian UFO DVDs... ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Hi Marc, here my impressions about the content of the DVDs: First I was impressed by the animated menu of the DVD: three flying saucers out of space heading towards the screen and then back to Earth. Then came the UFO letters in with the appropriate music, just like in the show. Great! Ahead with Moonbase and inside through the corridor into the command center. One can see the radarscreen with the episode titles and a short version of the main title on it and in the background the window which one can see - of course - the moonscape. If you wait long enough, you can watch a UFO passing by followed by an interceptor. The best menu so far, better than the Carlton and A&E ones! If you select an episode you will be accompanied through another corridor into the room for the interceptor pilots. You choose "Lancio Immediato" and jump into the tube to the episode. They went to great trouble with that menu. Congratulations! I also like the menu for the audio options with SID heading over a rotating Earth. The episodes are in three Italian versions and the English one. One of the Italian version is in stereo - but, of course, in pseudostereo. It's a mixture of reverb, double mono and a changing from left to right or the other way round, sometimes even in mono (when music and speech can be heard together). Not bad, but nothing for purists. The extra features seems to be the same one as with the Carlton DVDs - at least on DVD 1. There are the same small pictures from the episodes and from behind-the-scenes. Well, I'll have to compare it with the UK ones. Of course, there are the scripts as PDF files. I can't resist to check the bonus DVD, too. And this one is most interesting! It includes the feature film INVASION: UFO which is not of the same picture quality like the episodes (see examples) but that's OK for me because this is a rather dull made up of some episodes, therefore it fits :-) Well, it even has some charm this way round! The film is in English too. Furthermore it contains the trailer for this movie. The best part is the interview with Ed Bishop in English with Italian subtitles, lasting for 34 minutes! I have watched only snippets so far but it seems to be very interesting, well, at least enjoyable. Hey, there is even a hidden feature on this DVD! When you select the Bishop interview and skip it forward after the last (third) track you'll see the animated UFO on the moonsurface which start to glow and then you can enjoy 5 minutes from the ISOSHADO files! Excerpts from the visits of George Sewell, Wanda Ventham, Dolores Mantez (singing together with Mike B.), Gabrielle Drake, Mike Billington and of course Ed Bishop, some shots of the models and merchandising and the famous wig of Mr Bishop. Now, *that* is a great bonus! :-)) The DVD-ROM part contains PDF files of a 10 page Press kit from INVASION: UFO, a 60 page Press kit about the series and the 25 page transcript from INVASION: UFO. So far for today (and again it is way beyond midnight - but I'll had to do this :-) More following tomorrow! By the way, I asked Christian about the script PDF files on the
Italian UFO DVDs -- he said that they appear to be scans of the actual shooting scripts. If so, I'd say that's a pretty significant extra feature! Marc |
