to the 1960's "Hot Pants style clothing." The photo gallery included shots of Gabrielle Drake in her famous outfit change and others as seen in UFO. Worth a look at the sixties style and LOOK of UFO. ???? The months fly by - has it been four months already?
?????Talk about being old...I tried to show my children this GREAT Sci Fi series called UFO.? They are 13yrs,?16yrs,?and 17yrs.? They were not impressed.? They do not understand why "Dad" likes those 1960 and 1970's shows.? They did get a laugh during the party scene when Paul was "getting groovy?dancing with the ladies" and later woke up in a UFO.? The hair styles, side burns, and clothing, were just too overwelming for them to pay attention to the story.? THAT is when I felt OLD.??? ???? They also said that the ALIENS were not that scary...why did the?Aliens only use a chrome machine gun and not "ray guns"...and my son asked if the UFO's are so "advanced"...how come they missed so many laser shots at the SHADO vehicles?? They did not buy my answers.? My daughter asked if the organization of SHADO is so secret they can't tell anyone - why do all the planes and tanks have the words "SHADO" on them?? I told her she should not ask so many pointed questions and just get back to TEXTING her friends.? They tried to watch it with me.? In the end - I just have to watch the series alone.? My wife?can't make it through a single episode.? The quickest way to get alone time in my house is to put on an episode of UFO.? I just can't explain to them why exactly I love this show so much. ?????Purhaps it?came?along at a very impressionable time of my life.? I had discovered Science Fiction when UFO came out and the Anderson Shows were the BEST TV had to offer.? I loved UFO the best of all TV Sci Fi.? My next love was Space 1999.? As the years past - Babylon 5, Star Trek ENTERPRISE, and others were good - but they were not Anderson.? I have been waiting for UFO-2 updated series.? Remakes are not always bad.?? I still watch UFO about once a month.? I have scene every DVD ten times over.? I still look for more pictures and stills on the web.? I read the Shado POSTS every day.? I still enjoy every episode of UFO.? I think I?always will.? :) Gordon????????? -----Original Message----- From: Marc Martin <[hidden email]> To: [hidden email] Sent: Fri, 1 Aug 2008 7:29 pm Subject: Re: [SHADO] Re: Gabrielle Drake on the "Hot Pants" Web site!! > There was a link to a MEDIA website in england.? Gordon,
Don't feel bad. I'm in the same boat. My 20 year old son sat down once with me and watched part of "Identified" before getting up and leaving. (At least I didn't have "Lost In Space" on - I admit I purchased the 2nd season. I can't believe today, that I actually watched that show week after week...) The problem isn't you, it's them. Today's kids don't appreciate shows that have real dialog that actually contribute to character development - and contain no bad language. I also enjoy reading stories in the SHADO library - another thing today's kids don't enjoy doing. Keep the faith - there's nothing wrong with you! Long live SHADO! Hi All,
Still being fixed in the hospital, but thanks for all the kind emails, have kept me cheered up. Yes, I have this problem too. I don't have kids, but I have shown UFO (managed to get them to watch 2 or 3 episodes) to my nieces and nephews, who are very normal, decent, and typical bright kids of 2008, they just don't 'get it' at all either. Alex says the 'look' and the craft are 'cool' in a kind of retro way, but not very practical, and Amy said, "it must have been cool in its day when you were growing up"... neither meant this in a bad or patronising way, it's just that kids today seem very cynical. I was just a young kid at school when I heard my friends talking about this fantastic new show. It was SO different, colourful, fast acting, sinister, thought-provoking, mysterious... I swear it was ALL we talked about at school. I missed many episodes, and had to 'catch up' by listening to the 'versions' being talked about when going back to school on the next Monday... Getting any information about it was HARD. Countdown comics, the 2 novels bought for my birthday, but for a 7 year old hard to read... 1970 was of a time when a new feature film was shown at the pictures every few months, and there was time to digest what you had seen... no video recorders, so you had to extrapolate and record in your mind every last detail, and that's why UFO and many other TV series seemed to be slightly different that what was remembered years later, when watching a programme was as simple as popping a video or DVD into a slot... I remember the frustration of sharing a TV with my brothers and sisters, and trying to get peace and quiet so I could absorb as much of UFO as possible when it was shown... If I missed a beat, it was gone. I didn't know whe the show would be shown again... months, years... how things have changed shwn shows are repeated on demand, recorded disected, refurbished... I remember re-living the show the next day at school, and everyone giving different versions of what had happened and what it meant. UFO was of a certain time, and many if most of the people on this post shared that time, that special moment in time, when there was time, to watch, absorb, be thrilled, scared, excited, ... those times weren't so cynical and 'what's next' as they are today... but then I was 7! UFO and indeed pretty much ALL the Anderson show made a huge impression on me that has lasted right until now... I don't think there has been anything like it before or since... I'm sorry that kids/people today live in a world where it is hard to emulate that simple excitment... The world has changed, people has changed. In many ways I have not. UFO burns bright inside me, and still manages to rekindle that simple feeling... wonder and excitment... I still get a thrill when the opening credits start... My wife just understands it's one of 'my things' doesn't 'get it' either, but still looks out for any collectables... I don't mind being retro... if it keeps the kid alive in me. Best to all, Griff ps. Gay Ellis is definitely wearing tights/pantyhose with her silver skirt in the scene in Indentified when Straker is giving her a pep-talk in the leisure sphere over coffee... --- In [hidden email], "Robin" <mastomy1@...> wrote: > > Gordon, > Don't feel bad. I still find it amazing that I can now carry around every episode in pristine condition on a portable player. Simply unthinkable way back when and I try not to forget how precious UFO was when,a s you say, it was a such a fleeting joy. Like many here I remember desperately recording episodes on audio cassettes to retain some of it and writing down what was happening as it was screened the second time around so the tape would make some sense later. OMG the pressure! Is the cassette recorder working? Is it actually recording anything? Why can't I write faster? To this day, listening to as opposed to watching Close Up just feels the right way to enjoy it! |

SAVING UFO -
???? When VCR's first came out - I managed to record reruns of UFO in syndication and captured most of the episodes on video tape.? Unfortunately the series was being aired on a secondary TV station (Houston Channel 39) BEFORE cable.? I had to rig Aluminum extensions to my "hoop" Antenna and "rabbit ears" were sticking out the top of my TV.? I was desperate to get the episodes.? This was before cable and the transmission was grainy and faded from time to time on broadcast stations.? The quality was horrible - but I cherished those recorded UFO episode VHS tapes like GOLD - until I finally put them to rest.? The tapes were so old and worn - the magnetic tape was starting to crumble like egg shells.? If they went into a VCR - the tape simply shredded.? Then - UFO was finally released on DVD.? Now I understand that they will only last seven to twelve years before they degrade.? I burned back up copies last year just in case.? I wish there was a permanent medium that could preserve the data forever.? As a Fan I collected all the written and photograph media on UFO I could find.? Then came the internet - and finally the UFO Shado website!!? YES my prayers were answered!? UFO was alive and well on the net.???? ???? Not sure of yourself there? Maybe was on a bit too much of the sauce as you were doing all of this and can't really remember it for sure? The world's longest binge? .... from way back in the rabbit ears days to the advent of common DVD releases of UFO? Hi All, Still being fixed in the hospital, but thanks for all the kind emails, have kept me cheered up. I think that's quite a pessimistic prognosis. If you look after them I'm sure they'll last a lot longer than that. James |

Some of the tapes still played fine, while others were so loaded with dropouts that they were unwatchable. Marc |
