Hi all,
I've received confirmation from the producer of the Australian UFO DVDs that they will indeed not be coming out until mid 2005. However, they are looking at adding extra features which haven't been on any of the other UFO DVD releases, and one of these that's already been recorded is a commentary track by George Sewell! Marc if you buy them would you send us poor people in the US a transcript of what he says? I paid 83.00 US and I cant afford to get the same DVDs but different commentaries. bsl

I can certainly state my opinion about the commentary track after I hear it, like I've done with the commentary tracks on the UK and US UFO DVDs. But I didn't provide a transcript of the US commentary tracks for the folks who already bought the UK DVDs! Marc |
Even that would be ok. The funny thing is I thought George Sewell had died. Maybe I am confusing him with Tony Anholt? Do you know if any major star from UFO died? I would like to get the commentaries from all the sets but I know i cant afford them. I should have been more lucid. Your comments on his commentary will be fine. I just love commentaries from the stars who were in the shows. Ed Bishop was cool for Sub smash, but Sylvia Anderson bored me with the talk about fashions. bsl

> Maybe I am confusing him with Tony Anholt? Yes, maybe... George Sewell is still alive... Tony Anholt is not. Do you know if any major star from UFO died? These are the ones I know of: Gen. Henderson: Grant Taylor Dr. Jackson: Vladek Sheybal Miss Ealand: Norma Ronald Dr. Shroeder: Maxwell Shaw > Your comments on his commentary will be fine. Heh, heh... well, my comments may not be of much use to you then, because I thought Ed Bishop's commentary on SUB-SMASH was one of the worst DVD commentaries of all-time, but I rather enjoyed Sylvia Anderson's and Wanda Ventham's commentary on TIMELASH. Yes, you're right!
I think either Ed hadn't been correctly briefed on what was expected for the commentary, or he was just plain tired out, bored or jet-lagged. I have heard Ed one to one, on stage, on radio, TV etc. and I have never heard his voice sound like that on the Sub-Smash commentary... He sounds like either Kermit or Bill Gates... Sorry Ed, but it's true (I know Ed's in Australia at the moment, so I think I can get away with that ;) Best to all, Griff -----Original Message----- Heh, heh... well, my comments may not be of much use to you then, because I thought Ed Bishop's commentary on SUB-SMASH was one of the worst DVD commentaries of all-time, but I rather enjoyed Sylvia Anderson's and Wanda Ventham's commentary on TIMELASH. I think the quality of a commentary track can be greatly influenced by the talents and the preparation done by the people who produce it. For example, when Jeff Smart did the KILL STRAKER and TIMELASH commentaries, he asked me to come up with a list of topics that fans might be interested in, and those topics were covered in the commentaries. Also, I think he recorded a lot of extra material, essentially doing an "interview" (cleverly done with the other commentator asking the questions), which he then went and edited back into the episode commentary. As a result, we get an interesting commentary without any stretches of silence. Meanwhile, I don't think the Carlton producers did ANY homework. prior to recording the SUB-SMASH commentary. I think they just brought Ed in, sat him down, played the episode, and let Ed say whatever. And at the end of the 50 minutes, they were done. That may work in some cases (e.g., it sounds like Gerry Anderson had done his own homework in advance), but it didn't work for the SUB-SMASH commentary. One thing that would be nice would be if the Australian UFO DVD had a *new* Ed Bishop commentary -- one that was prepared in a manner more similar to the A&E commentaries. Marc |
I also thought Mr Bishop's commentary could have been better. Also, he sounded a bit old and tired, as has been mentioned elsewhere. That Carlton thought this comentary was fit to put out seems a bit odd.
