George Sewell in 'Special Branch'

jamesgibbon

I was delighted to discover that the newly-released 'The Sweeney'
series 1 DVD box set has an episode of 'Special Branch' among the
special features (it was made by the same company, Euston Films, as
The Sweeney and this particular episode features Sweeney co-star
Dennis Waterman).

Special Branch is not particularly well-remembered, and I don't
think it's been repeated for many years or even released on video,
but George Sewell played the lead role, Chief Inspector Craven,
shortly after his stint in UFO - and was really very good in it in
my opinion.

Also prominently featured were one of the Amnesia Drug victims from
THE SQUARE TRIANGLE, Patrick Mower (Craven's sidekick, Haggerty)
and Paul Eddington from 'Yes Minister' (Strand).

Hello

I believe that the same company that is putting out The Sweeney is
considering releasing Special Branch next year. Of course, the first series
had UFO actor Derren Nesbitt as the lead, before it went to film and got Mr
Sewell

That's excellent news - I hope they'll consider giving it a good
clean-up first if so - it's obvious from the 'free' episode that
the prints aren't in good condition, and as UFO DVD customers will
be aware, it's remarkable what can be done to improve the
appearance of old material.

Ah yes - I must admit I'd forgotten that. British TV was a very
incestuous affair back then, it seemed like every actor turned
up in someone else's programme at some time.
