Hi All,
Just finished reading the recently published (by
'Century 21 Books', a.k.a. the Gerry Anderson fan club
"Fanderson") the first volume of the 'UFO' Original
Screenplays. Anyone else read them and have any
thoughts ?
Just a couple or three of points I noticed about the
first four scripts ('Identified', 'Computer Affair',
'Flight Path' and 'Survival')...
The Straker character is portrayed right from the
start as 'not a people person', ignoring, snubbing and
insulting subordinates from Harlington-Straker studio
staff to 'Regular Army' Colonels ! If anything, Ed
Bishop's portrayal of the character in the series has
taken the edge off Straker's coolness (however hard
that may be to believe :^ )...
Alec Freeman is stated in the script to be
Australian... largely reflected in the character's use
of swear words in the original script ! (Apologies to
Aussie fans, who must have suffered enough already in
Tom Oliver going from the sublime - 'U.F.O.' - to the
ridiculous - 'Neighbours' :^ ). However, George Sewell
says (according to the editor of this script
publication) he was never told the character was
supposed to be Australian !
Finally, the third main role was to be played by
another actor who had appeared in the 'UFO dress
rehearsal', the film 'Journey to the Far Side of the
Sun', Franco Derosa as Moonbase commander Franco
Desica. But apparently, his 'prima donna' behaviour
got him the sack after only three days... giving the
opportunity first for Gabrielle Drake to take on a
larger role as de facto Moonbase commander, and second
for a new male lead to be introduced... a role to be
filled by Michael Billington as Paul Foster.
Hmm... very interesting...
Andy
