Smacks to much of plagiarism to me.

Copyright theft is a pet hate of mine as you rightly point out, but TV companies do pay royalties and obtain permission to use copyright material, so this wouldn't have bothered me in the slightest. However it seems that they are using a different piece of music, one which plagiarises the UFO theme (assuming, as Marc suggests, that Barry Gray isn't in fact given a credit). I've just listened to it, and it clearly owes a great deal to the UFO theme. Copyright theft and plagiarism are two different things, but I disapprove of both, personally. Having said that - it's really the person who recorded this new piece, who has represented someone else's work as his/her own, who deserves to take the stick, not the Cartoon Network. It's perhaps asking a little too much (in my opinion) to expect a TV company to take a position on this, if they are even aware of it. |

You are so right, James! It would be a good idea to find out what plagiarist is passing Barry Gray music off as his own, especially since Barry doesn't seem to be the only person he's stealing music from, if Queen's Flash Gordon was used in the 1st season. Who is the idiot? Yours, Denise

Well, I did sent the Cartoon Network a pointed email last night after I
figured out how to on their site.(you have to go to the Help section to find it.). I explained that the music was Barry Gray's and that he was not credited for it. I expect they will have to run it by the legal department before they comment and this being the weekend that isn't likely to happen before next week. James K. Seems like you might get a better response if you email the copyright holders to the UFO theme, at Carlton Media International: http://www.carltonint.co.uk/ Marc |

Don't you think it would be nice to find out the story behind all this before
we lynch this guy? Or should we just kill him and ask questions later? Me thinks we're taking this a BIT too seriously.....but that could just be me. Maybe you should know the story on this before you vilify the guy. More than likely, he got permission and payed a royalty. Even if he didn't, I just listened to the clip and it seems different enough that it might not be out and out copyright infringment. I've heard plenty of songs used in commercials and movies and stuff, that are of similar type caricatures of other well known songs, similar enough to get the hint across as to what the user intended, but without actually infringing on the copyright of the origional creator. You know, I watched two eps of BIG O on Cartoon
Network/Adult Swim...never heard the UFO theme sample on the intro or outro. Did they change it for the English dubbed version? ===== __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? New Yahoo! Photos - easier uploading and sharing. http://photos.yahoo.com/ |

The use of the UFO theme as the theme to Big O started just last week so it
is something new. Check it out tonight, that is if they haven't changed it after my message to them over the weekend with is highly unlikely. James K. [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] |
