Hello friends,
i am Paul (not Foster!...LOL) and am new to the group and frankly
just back in the UFO fold after about a 30 year hiatus! ;-)
like probably a lot of you, i remember watching bits and pieces of
UFO as a small noy back in the early 70's when it was released in
the US. it must have been in syndication like Star Trek was at the
time and though i don't remember much about it from my youth, i
decided to take a chance on it and buy the complete DVD megaset
about a month ago!
well, all i can say is that i was not dissapointed! what a FABulous
show it turned out to be! i found myself watching at least two eps a
night whenever i could because i could never seem to get enough of
the boys (and ladies!) of SHADO!
Ed Bishop was perfect as Commander Straker! he had that semi-
detached but very cerebral and commanding prescence that made his
character carry the show on so many levels. and his relationships
with Col Freeman and Col Foster reminded me a lot of how Kirk and
Spock and Bones related in Star Trek. and it was truly a shame when
they had that long break and changed studios and "good 'ol Alec" was
no longer at Straker's side.
it was also unfortunate that the show lost Gabrielle Drake as well.
she had that shy sweetness about her and that amazing body that made
me wish that the eps spent more time at Moonbase! LOL ;-)
but what really made the show for me (besides the GREAT music!), was
the diversity of episodes. so many tragic endings that you don't
often see on TV shows of that time or anytime for that matter.
and it was very sad to hear of the untimely deaths of Ed Bishop and
Mike Billington....
anyways, i am glad to be aboard and look forward to reading the
messages and contributing something when i can.
Paul
