commanded: >So, for the next two weeks, let's hear people's comments on IDENTIFIED! I sat down per my commander's orders and watched Identified. Although it's not one of my favorite episodes, since it's the pilot and everyone isn't yet comfortable in their roles, I find several things about it very interesting to watch. First, I enjoy the camera play throughout the episode. The way the camera takes its time panning around a scene, sometimes ending up where it began, adds to the brooding element of this episode. And the final scene that initiates from a closeup of Straker's eye to another closeup of his eye drawing back to the funeral in progress is very effective. Second, I really enjoy Straker's monologue. It's overly dramatic in spots, but it still comes across very realistically, as well as very terrifying in its logic. We are presented with a very reasonable enemy. Callous. With superior technology and weaponry. But reasonable nonetheless. And for me, this adds to the fear surrounding them, instead of diminishing it. X-Files often disappointed me by not giving enough reason behind the alien attacks and infiltration to even seem logical. UFO always told us why, even when the execution of the ploy didn't make sense (as some of the later episodes prove.) And finally, they took time in the pilot to show us everything SHADO had in its arsenal against this fearsome foe. We got to see HQ from nearly every angle, along with our favorite radar operator being called on the carpet. We got to see Moonbase and its several spheres, including scenes from the locker room that still make me blush after several viewings! (Okay, I'm a prude!) BTW, I never got to see these scenes as a teen, since my network edited them before they aired. And we got to see Skydiver and its cute captain in his cabin. (I have always found it a cool touch that Leila's picture is on his wall in that scene and didn't know about the deleted scene until the DVDs came out. It works very well without the added scene for me.) And it was only fitting that Peter gets to shoot down their first UFO. How'd I do, Commander? *grin* Yours, Denise _________________________________________________________________ Send and receive Hotmail on your mobile device: http://mobile.msn.com
Straker, somehow it's always about you.

Ahh, but you're fogetting Straker's line -- something to the effect of "we've had a few sightings, but NO interceptions". So that WAS their first interception. Thanks Denise for your great comments on IDENTIFIED! You mention that they introduce everything SHADO has in this episode, which I think isn't strictly true -- the SHADO mobiles and lunar module/carrier are introducted in COMPUTER AFFAIR, and then we settle down after that... Anyone else got any comments on IDENTIFIED? Marc |
