Hi all,
I unexpectedly caught this episode in the early hours this morning and thought I'd make some more comments :-) This was the first episode I ever saw and is the one I watch most often, although not because it's my favourite .. :-/ Throughout the first half of this episode Straker seems merely irritated by Foster's persistence and appears to have no compunction in 'removing' him, should he prove to be any real threat to SHADO security. Not exactly the warmest of characters at this stage! Once Foster is onto him, Straker takes full responsibility to deal with the 'security problem', leaving Freeman and us in no doubt what his intentions are, although intriguingly he tries both denial and intimidation first, before finally dispatching Foster. To then discover he's been manipulating `behind the scenes' in carrying out his extremely well thought out plan to ensure he gets the outcome he wants is quite simply brilliant. His intuition has pin sharp accuracy, right down to the last moments where Paul accepts membership of SHADO. Despite being written purely to introduce Paul Foster, this episode offers a clear insight into Straker's true nature. But what I really enjoy is the way Ed Bishop permits Straker to relish every moment of his success with the self assurance of someone who knows he is proving himself right, but without the slightest hint of arrogance or disdain whatsoever. This is Straker at his absolute coolest, imho :-D Sarah |
