ITV 4 episode "Conflict"

Hi all,

Tonites episode on ITV 4 was "Conflict". Very dark picture :-(

There were a couple of edits – the end of Straker's first argument
with Henderson where he stone-walls him and Straker marches out and
the entire scene where Freeman sits holding the chess piece
contemplating the loss of the module pilots.

It's interesting the choice of bits to edit out, where in this case
there isn't any obvious reason other than for time, but why these
bits? I think they're important to convey the character's feelings.
If it were absolutely *necessary* to edit a minute or two, I'd have
taken out the scene of the mobile landing – not essential to the
story other than to confirm Paul made it back safely, but then I
guess any SFX fans wouldn't agree :-)

I like this episode – has good dialogue and ironic humour – also in
what doesn't get said is especially important, you have to think
about what's going on, may be why the series didn't appeal to the
masses. I think the scene where Straker and Foster just walk straight
through Miss Ealand's office without even acknowledging her is a nice
touch :-D

The plot may not make a lot of sense when examined closely, but it
works at the level intended, ie, to illustrate the "Conflict" between
Henderson with his IAC hat on exerting his authority over Straker,
who justifies SHADO and his own command by literally shutting the
whole thing down while a UFO is approaching – puts poor old concrete
thinking Henderson firmly in his place! Straker doesn't rely on
logic but intensively felt intuition, that turns out to be right, of
course!! Very definitely what makes his character so compelling,
IMHO. Evidence for being an INTJ type, perhaps?

Bye for now,

Sarah
