ITV 4 episode "Dalotek Affair"

moonbasegirl
Hi all,

Last week's episode "Dalotek Affair" – a half-decent picture for
once :-O There were numerous edits:

Inside the Dalotek base, from where Tanner says "...visit from the
military", right through to the fade out of Foster arriving through
the airlock (including exterior shot of moonmobile)

Following Ford telling Straker "nothing I'm afraid", during the final
communication blackout; included exterior shot of Moonbase and
interior shot of control sphere; interceptors flying in formation;
the technician talking briefly to Foster

Following this, there were several brief edits of SID, the
interceptors and the UFO.

This is a fair episode; with the emphasis very much on Moonbase.
It's nice to see Alec and Paul actually socializing! Straker is
pretty p***ed off with Dalotek and poor Ford is getting more grief
than usual as a result ;-D

I thought the amnesia drug erased the previous twelve hours; in this
episode it has to erase the previous ten to twelve days! It looks to
me like the visor on the space helmet on Jane Carson's stunt double
(?) flips up when she flies backwards during the explosive
decompression.

The actress Tracy Reed playing Jane (with the lovely long hair and
eyelashes – only one of these being real ;-) comes from a
distinguished showbiz family; taking her name from her stepfather
(producer Sir Carol Reed) whose nephew was the late Oliver Reed! Her
first (brief) marriage was to the illustrious British actor Edward
Fox – well, I thought this was interesting :-)

Apparently, the episode ran short by some minutes and the interview
of Dr. Stranges was added after the episode was finished. The
corresponding scenes of Straker and Ford were also shot some time
later, which probably explains why Straker suddenly looks
different! In an interview on his site, Mike Billington says -
"There is a scene in The Dalotek Affair where I am spinning around
surrounded by coloured lights and dreaming of kissing a character
played by Tracy Reed. That scene was filmed at the end of the shoot
and was added because the episode was under time after editing. I
think part of the reason that it was so short was that the director
made me speed up so much of the dialogue during the Moonbase
scenes." :-D

This episode does have a lot of technical dialogue, something that
Mike talks about in his DVD commentary. He recalls some lines that
he found very difficult to remember and he had to write the first few
words on the floor of the Moonbase set to remind him of how it
started! Even thirty odd years later, he could still remember it,
referring to it as his `party piece' :-) The dialogue is as follows;

"A steady stream of charged particles . . . protons or
electrons . . .emitted by the sun. During intense solar activity -
so-called flares or sunspots - there is a dramatic increase in radio
frequency radiation . . ."

I couldn't recall Foster saying these lines in the finished episode
and they aren't there, although they *are* in the original script.
They must have been edited out – poor Mike – all that trouble for
nothing!

Finally, I was amused to read some more lines that were obviously
removed in the final scene between Paul and Jane – " Unfortunately
regulations up here demand a....strictly working relationship between
male and female operatives - of whatever rank."

Just as well these lines were changed, after what was going on in
last weeks episode! ;-D

Thanks for reading,

Sarah
