It's a little while since I looked at this kit so I might be a
somewhat off kilter with I have to say here. Although one point to
bare in mind is: To be honest although this kit is a good starting
point If we are being kind the Imai Sky 1 does have a few
inaccuracies!! and drilling out the Matra pods I would suggest is the
least of your worries. As Someone has pointed allready there is a
excellant article on accurizing the Imai kit on
www.starshipmodeller.com. and from memory the conclusion the reviewer
made in the end was, it would have been easier to scratch-build.
However, as it is the only decent kit on the market and taking that
you don't want to scratch-build :-) Here is how I would suggest you
open up the those akward little Matra pods openings. Firstly, get your
ever useful dremel or Minicraft drill. determine what size drill you
want to open up the holes. Then choose the size below! then carefully
drill into the holes using a pin vice or similar to hold the pods,
once they are all opened up, get a needle file and carefully open up
to the required size, trying to leave the characteristic inner cone to
the opening. As I said I hav'nt looked at this kit for a while. But if
you can drill from the back instead of the front, that may help. Once
opened up you may wish to insert a dummy blanking plate to stop seeing
right through.
That's How I would tackle it, but there is more than one way to skin a
cat, but I hope it helps.
