I've thought alot about the "comfortable and unchallenged" comment and
doubt that Ed was at all derogatory since he wants to be part of any
UFO revival. My guess is that his comment was a reflection of what has
happened with recent remakes and science fiction (a great example was
the heated BATTLESTAR GALACTICA debae at the 1999 yahoo group). I
didn't see Galactica, so the best examples I could think of are shows
like the X-FILES, MATRIX and DARK CITY where gloom and doom are the
best one can hope for. As for remakes, LOST IN SPACE was probably
truer to the original pilot of the series and not the cartoon it
bacame. MISSION IMPOSSIBLE would have to be my best example of what
not to do with a remake. Make a good Tom Cruise action movie, but why
take a classic sereis and distort it beyond all recognition by making
original characters nothing like the original (Mr. Phelps). That would
be the same as turning Ed Straker into a murderous traitor who helps
the aliens destroy the Earth. So I'd personally take "comfortable and
unchallenged" to mean clearly-defined parameters of the "good guys"
and the enemy without plot twists and betrayals reflecting the
paranoia of the times.
Sorry to have rambled on, but in case anyone's still there, I think
the update of the INVADERS was very well done as it modernized the
concept without ruining the original.
