terrible color. what IS it with the toys of this period? GREEN
interceptors..GREEN Space:1999 Eagles. Of course, regardless of the
color, I always thought Straker's car was ugly. huge, wide, fat,
ungainly, and in general an eyesore. And why is Foster's car pink
for heaven's sakes?

While we're at it, I have just finished theentire series on DVD.
What does Col Lake DO besides stand about and look perplexed?
At least Freeman went into The Man's office for a belt now and then.

And another thing as long as I am on the soapbox. While I can
appreciate Wanda's beauty, a shirt open waaaay down to there is
completely inappropriate for a military-run organization. Of
course, so is Foster's groovy raspberry jumpsuit with pale blue
turtleneck.

OK. feel better now.

Well since the body is made of plastic, it's certainly not merely
a respray. I suspect it's genuine, personally.

I can remember, when I was a kid, if I thought I'd seen an oddity such as you describe (Col. Lake's attire, while looking nice, not being realistically militaristic), my dad would say "Use your imagination". I'm not saying that to you, but while SHADO is allegedly a top secret military organisation, if the series producers have good looking people in the cast they're going to take liberties with what might be deemed acceptable military conduct. Another series that didn't adhere strictly to any codes of dress was Battlestar Galactica. The Galactica was supposedly run on strictly military lines, but the fighter pilots, although wearing futuristic uniforms, didn't look very militaristic - no haircuts, long hair. This seems to have been better dealt with in the remake, though.

Just a thought...

And not forgetting that nice little brown and blue number Straker wears
once, oh and who could (even if you wanted to) forget the nice little beige
'romper suit' which he had to wear in a couple of eps. I think the medical staff
came off best, at least they all looked convincing

More to the point, SHADO was a top secret _para_-military
organisation that hid under a movie studio! Straker and Foster were
specifically seen to act as movie executives, and movie exectutives
and "creative" types do NOT walk around in military garb with jarhead
haircuts; they wear fashionable business clothing with hairstyles to
match, and that's what Sylvia's clothes designs and the accompanying
hairdos were intended to be -- an extrapolation of late 60s clothes
and hairstyles to 1980, over a decade in the future at the time she
designed them. Frankly, I wish she'd been right; I hate srizonified
ties!

Similarly, Virginia Lake was only know as "Colonel" Lake when on duty
as a SHADO operative; outside the organisation (and especially arounf
the studios), she would have the cover of some kind of movie high-
flyer, and would dress accordingly -- all in the name of security, of
course. <g>

Grrr... Don't get me started on Blasphemy Laxative (aka neo-
Galactica)... but on the topic of appropriate hairdos, it should be
noted that long hair is (or was, in the 70s at least) not unheard-of
or even unusual in military service; the Swedes, IIRC, allowed long
hair provided it was kept away from equipment by a hair net or
something. Since we saw Colonial Warriors either wearing helmets or
not using equipment that their hair could get caught in, it's not an
issue, and certainly no detraction from their militaristic bent or
lack of same. Just because one nation's military does things in a
certain way does not mean that everyone else has to imitate them, for
now and eternity hereafter.

Fair point on the movie executive angle as to why some of the SHADO personnel didn't look militaristic. The reason I mentioned Galactica was because I've been reading some articles on the series and one aspect criticised mildly was the appearance of the fighter pilots therein. I've only seen the miniseries of the remake so don't know what to make of the series proper.
