Universal will be releasing this in June on R1 DVD. The previous R1
release by Image Entertainment is long out of print. |
That is great news, I've long wanted a copy of this film on DVD. Wonder if there will be any digital remastering and / or extras... ?

The phrase "walking on thin ice" comes to mind with some ebay material(!) The movie seems to be almost "forgotten", which is a shame, and the special effects for it's time were top notch. The old DVD was also letterboxed and the image suffered as a result. Hopefully the new Universal DVD will have 16x9 enhancement. Extras will probably be limited to a trailer; the cost versus return would probably be prohibative.

It also should be put out with it's proper UK title - Doppelganger, and not the bogus US one - Journey to the Far Side of the Sun.

Hey, giving things bogus new names is one of many charming American
traits. If we went around being proper and respectful all the time we might get mistaken for Canadians or something. :) Cheers! That said, Paramount did produce some decent extras for Danger: Diabolik! (1967) a film just as culty and obscure. Gerry Anderson stuff probabaly has about the same level of cult-ness as Mario Bava's stuff in the US, so I suppose it is possible a commentary may be possible. Lets not hold our breath though.

I would just LOVE to see a similar themed film also get released on to dvd. It was a 1973 made for TV {planned TV pilot} Called The Stranger starring Glenn Corbett as astronaut Neil Stryker and Cameron Mitchell as Government agnet Benedict. It's been many yrs. since I have last seen it shown {badly cut} on TV. Anyone here remeber this movie? It would have made a wonderful series. Some M4TV movies have started to turn up on dvd. I hope someday this one and many more also get out on dvd. Remastered, uncut and clean. A lady can hope can't she. April D -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- So that WAS real.... Back when I was a teenager I remember seeing that.... and then never heard a trace of it since. I missed the first part of the movie, but remember bits of the latter part. I also remember the guy's name being Stryker, and there was some sort of a vast government entity on the other planet searching for him, and there being these little radio speakers in the native's pickup trucks giving out the government orders and search news. I began to wonder if it was a real movie or if I'd just imagined seeing it. The same thing happened for another movie I think I've seen - where mankind sends these two ships to Mars in a race; The earth is divided up into two hemispheres, North and South, hostile to each other (like the cold war), and each side sends a ship, (one named Typhoon, the other named Hyperion), and they race to get to Mars first. I think it was in black and white maybe made in the 50's or 60's. I've made an exhaustive internet search for it but can't find a clue. Has anybody else heard of it, or know what I'm talking about? Dave, I think I've seen that movie about the race to mars. Here in Australia, they used to put all those type movies on in the early morning during school holidays. A lot were b/w. I saw Doppelganger then and Battle beneath the Earth and have never seen any of them since. That was back in the good old days when all the regional TV stations were independent, now they are all owned by the big networks sigh. But they did have Day of the Triffids on Fox classics the other night in b/w. (Now there is a movie begging to be remade, hopefully more like the book) I hope it's a sign they are digging through the archives.

Isn't it a bit ironic that the USA, which is known as one of the most powerful nations in the world, and by extension one of the most intelligent, has to have some titles/words/phrases replaced if they are deemed "too complicated"? Not just Doppleganger, which they had dumbed down to JTTFSOTS. The 1989 Bond movie which was to be called Licence Revoked was given a slightly dumbed down title of Licence To Kill, for example. A lot of UK TV shows never get sold to the US without them interfering with them because sometimes they can't understand the accents, but we get all their shows, regardless of whether we understand them or not. This isn't a bit of US-bashing, by the way, just an observation, before someone accuses me of being xenophobic. A few of my favourite shows come from the US of A, such as WKRP and Airwolf. Getting back to the subject in hand, I wouldn't mind seeing Doppleganger on DVD. But without the dumbed down title. I recently copied it to DVD from when it was shown on ITV a year or so ago myself, but the picture quality is a bit off. I wonder - is that the DVD, or one of them at least, that turns up on Ebay sometimes? But was there ever a print of the film with Doppelganger as the main title? |
