Journey to the Far Side of the Moon (AKA "Doppelganger")

Paul Bowers
I just saw this movie for the first time (http://us.imdb.com/Title?0064519)
and the special effects/model work is amazing, given that it was made in
1969.

[For those that don't know what this subject has to do with UFO, it was an
Anderson film featuring Bishop, Sewell, Sheybal.]

Especially nice was the explosions/fires, those are difficult to reproduce
at small scale. One visual flub was when the launchpad retaining arm fell
away from the rocket and bounced dramatically a few times as if it was made
of plastic. For those that believe that the moon landing was fakery, I'd
suggest looking into what the Andersons were doing at the time...

Has multi-million dollar CGI really improved the visuals of space-related
movies all that much (mind you, I just saw Dobby in the new Harry Potter
movie and it blew me away - where can I get one of those)?

Paul

PS I went to the Carlton site (http://www.ufo-dvd.com/go.html) and was
somewhat puzzled that Marc's site wasn't listed on their Links page. I would
have thought that that would be a no-brainer.

The only thing I don't get about the whole film--and I
saw it several times when it was TV--was that the ship
that Thinnes flies BACK to the docking ship was
contructed so that the polarity was reversed so it
would dock correctly. in fact, one character even SAID
so! Yet, when he tried to do it, it STILL didn't work
and he had to attempt his ill-fated re-entry.

I think they were guessing that the polarity would be reversed too, but
with the destruction of the Dove (The Dove...right???) from our earth
(Earth Prime) on dopple-earth there was no way to test the theory except to
go up to the main ship still in orbit and try it out. Or fly two ships up
to the main ship, each with a different polarity and then test it
out. Probably from a safe distance! : - )

I wonder if there was a radio or some other electronics on Thinnes (Like a
casio watch?), when he was thrown clear of the wreck that could have made
this a nit to pick in this movie.

Still, a good film, my favorite parts were the trip through space. I never
liked the idea of a twin Earth on the other side of the sun.

I was speaking to Herbert Lom over the weekend - he's the guy with a camera
in his eye in Doppelganger - and he had happy memories of working with Gerry
Anderson.

Gareth,

How's he doing? He is one of my favorite charcter actors. I still
think one of his best roles was as Napoleon in War and Peace. It's on
Movieplex here in thew US on Thursday afternoon.

I personally feel that you can spend a ton of money on CGI and other
related special effects technologies, and if the effect isn't backed
by both an excellent story and competent direction then it's all
wasted effort. Apollo 13 is a good example of a well-executed "space
effects" film. Frankly, I'd rather watch that, or 2001: A Space
Odyssey, or Forbidden Planet, or Silent Running, or Robinson Crusoe
On Mars, or Doppelganger, or a UFO episode such as "The Cat With Ten
Lives" than stuff such as "Supernova" or "Event Horizon".

James K(who know not to mention a certain film by name lest a Klingon might
see it)

I couldn't agree more.. BUT...

You didn't mention Doctor Who!! the *best* special effects ever produced for TV ;O)
A perfect example of an excellent story-line and direction making *all* the difference.

I didn't mention Doctor Who because I usually don't think of "space
scenes" when thinking of my favorite episodes (e.g. Pyramids Of Mars,
Rememberance Of The Daleks, any episode with a Sontaran in it,
etc.). The closest "space" episode of Doctor Who I truly enjoy would
be "Earthshock".

I guess my fave space type eps would be 'Ark in Space' - 'Edge of Eden' - 'Revenge of the Cybermen' ... Hmm... I better stop there, or I'll go on forever :O)
Although when I originally replied, I was thinking *general* special effects, moreso than space effects.

Yes... the Sontaran are very groovy characters!! My fave Sontaran ep would be 'The Two Doctors'.

Thanks for the e-mail Tom

He's looking well. He's well into his eighties, but apart from being
slightly deaf he's in good health. He had plenty of time for people,
although I've heard he can be a bit awkward to get autographs from through
the post (so I went prepared with everything I wanted signing and he signed
it all!) He seemed to have a good time at the meal, but left early (probably
due to his age and the fact it did begin to get a bit loud).

I'm afraid I dont know him personally, as he was attending the same charity
dinner I was attending. I go to these events regularly and have met a good
few celebs over the last twelve months.

Thanks again

Ark in space/moonbase

Tony Irvine
In reply to this post by jaimedotnet
it's probably been mentioned like a million times in here, but I'm a
newbie to this club, and I don't think I have the internet bandwidth
to got through all the 9000 odd posts...

Since this post mentions my fave doctor who episode of all I THOUGHT
I'd bring up my question. I've been led to believe that the
equipment in the Doc Who ep "Ark in space" (and many others from the
TOM BAKER era) has the sets from UFO integrated into them
(particularly Moonbase sets). Is this true? It certainly looks like
them...

Arguably the most prominent 'role' for UFO hardware was in the
Pertwee episode The Green Death. Moonbase's central console
was employed as BOSS, a megalomaniac computer.

Oh, best Who? I'd have to plump for Logopolis.

Ok, who's gonna write a UFO/Who (Baker/Leela) crossover?
Amelia?

Ohhhhhhhhhh, Leela ;)

It *is* true, Tony :-)

Take a look at these two frame captures from the "Ark" episode:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/SHADO/files/memorymetropolis/drwho-
arkspace01.jpg and
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/SHADO/files/memorymetropolis/drwho-
arkspace02.jpg

(or go to the Files section into the "memorymetropolis" file and
click on the drwho-arkspace pictures if the links above don't work
properly)

Some tape machines from Skydiver are also visible.

He's probably best known for his role as Chief Inspector Charles Dreyfus in
the Pink Panther movies. IMDB lists his acting career as going back to 1937!

And, certainly in the UK, the 60s psychiatric series The Human
Jungle, as Dr. Roger Corder (sp?)
